Preservation Buffalo Niagara was created last year from a merger of two existing preservation groups, the Preservation Coalition of Erie County, and the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier. One of the programs of the Landmark Society was the annual preservation awards program, which has honored many distinguished preservationists and projects. Happily, Preservation Buffalo-Niagara will be continuing this tradition, and is issuing a call for nominations, seeking exemplary historic preservation projects from throughout its seven-county region (Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Orleans, Genesee, and Wyoming) from the year past. Nominations are due February 25.
According to Catherine Schweitzer of the Baird Foundation, one of the chief supporters of the consolidation effort and new organization, there are two new categories for awards this year. One is for residential properties, and the other is for excellence in preservation craftsmanship–for outstanding preservation work by woodworkers, masons, metalworkers, or other artisans. Catherine told me that the work of these craftsmen (who unfortunately seem to be diminishing in number every year) is often overlooked in the success of preservation projects, and should rightfully be celebrated and acknowledged. I agree.
A complete list of categories is:
- Excellence in Restoration Awards
- Excellence in Rehabilitation/Adaptive Use Award
- Stewardship Award Preservation
- Service and Leadership Awards
- New Construction Award
- Preservation Craft Award
- Neighborhood Conservation Award
- Landscape Preservation Award
- Education/Outreach Award
- Landmark Pewter Plate Award
Please see the information below for more details on each category, and nominations forms–and nominate your favorite preservation projects (and preservationists) for an award! To get the ideas rolling, below is a list of some of the successful preservation projects and advances from 2008, as covered by Buffalo Rising.
Preservation Buffalo Niagara and the Buffalo Preservation Board will announce their respective awardees at a luncheon in downtown Buffalo on May 8th. Guest speaker will be Peter Brink, Executive Vice President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
