Due to the increased activity at LaSalle Park I had not been over to Delaware Park in a while. Today I went over to observe the park cleanup in preparation for the sold-out Elvis Costello show (Rockin’ at the Knox) tomorrow night. It was then that I noticed these attractive benches that now line the walking path that leads up to the Rose Garden. Each of the benches has a commemorative plaque on it specifying details about who the bench was donated in honor of. This was the first time that I had ever seen anything other than a lone picnic table in or around that area. I think that it was last summer when the picnic table was set on fire, so up until now there was really no place to rest, while on a walk.
The donated benches are not cheap. Each one costs $5000, and that includes the cement foundation, the custom bench, the plaque and the inscription. Once the bench is ordered, the donor works with the park’s landscape architect to identify a spot in any one of the Olmsted Parks. The benches are sturdy enough to weather a winter and attractive enough to invite a passerby to take a load off. Sometimes you don’t realize what is missing in a park until it actually shows up one day. If you’re interested in purchasing a commemorative bench for an Olmsted Park, contact the conservancy.
