While on his way to work in the Theater District, Giovanni D’Angelo came across a fashion billboard relic from a long defunct department store.
As if frozen in time, the advertisement is a beautiful reminder as to the history of the once formidable shopping district. “I assume this hasn’t been seen since the 1950’s,” Giovanni wrote to me. “This was just uncovered along the Washington Street side of the old AM&A’s Department Store. Since AM&A’s didn’t move into this location until 1960, this would have been from when it was the J.N. Adam’s Department Store – looks like new!”
I’m not sure what is planned for this fashionably dated billboard, but it would be prudent to see it somehow salvaged and reused as either an outdoor public art piece or even inside one of the nearby public-accessible businesses (if it is in jeopardy where it is now located).
