A Visit to the Grease Pole Festival

The 37th Annual Grease Pole Festival wrapped up yesterday with one of the most unusual contests that I have ever seen. A spirited display of bravado culminated in a fiery final race where one team managed to …

Started in 1987, the Friendship Festival has enjoyed 20 years of growth and local impact to both sides of the Niagara River, located at the east end of Lake Erie. The Festival is marking the July 1st, 1867 birth of Canada, the July 4th, 1776, Declaration of Independence of the United States of America, and the W…

bocce... not Bocce

Despite the less than perfect weather, this year's Italian Festival proved to be another big hit. One of the most noticeable additions to the venue was the sound coming from center stage. The music was being piped through speakers throughout the festival grounds so you didn't have to be standing next to the band shell to hear the live music. This gave festival goers the ability to roam Hertel in search of some really delicious food and still hear the performances. Good thinking guys and gals.

Councilman Marc Coppola was on hand earlier today to show festival goers that it takes a lot more than a light drizzle to dampen festival spirits. The councilman was busy playing a serious round of bocce (no Buffa…

Friendship Festival @ Riverside Park

The Friendship Festival is a celebration of the bond between Canada and the United States spanning nearly 200 years of peace. The unique relationship is especially prominent along the "Niagaras", the area of Southern Ontario and Western New York which share an international border. Or…

Juneteenth afternoon

Queenseyes must have teleporting capabilities. It seems it was only a few minutes ago that I ran into him at Juneteenth. I was sure I'd get home and post these shots before he could. But then again, I did make a detour for some yummy ribs.

Juneteenth 2005 was a fun celebration. Don't miss it next year! Enjoy some more photos. These are not as good as Figmo Sr.'s or QE's - but not too shabby considering I was carrying a toddler on my back!

Come celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Juneteenth Festival this weekend. The Juneteenth Festival of Buffalo was started in 1976 by B.U.I.L.D., a community-based organization, as a culturally relevant alternative to the country's Bicentennial Celebration. The group originally blocked off part of Jefferson Avenue, the "Main Street" of Buffalo's Black community, for a weekend celebration. Murals were painted, vendors set up booths to sell ethnic foods and wares, and entertainment and festivities were abundant. After several years, the Juneteenth Festival outgrew Jefferson Avenue. It is now held in Martin Luther King Jr. Park at the intersection of Be…

Buffalo Pride

The first Gay Pride march was on June 28, 1970 to commemorate the Stonewall Rebellion in New York a year earlier--a rebellion resulting from police harassment of the gay community. The Stonewall Rebellion was like a gay Watts, a rallying point which helped end the clandestine gay movement of the 50s and 60s and brought about a much more voc…
