The Barn @ The Inner Harbor

When I peered into The Barn this past Friday, I was surprised to see something that looked like a shuttle ship from the original show, Star Trek. Whether it was intentionally designed to look that way or not, it was the last thing that I expected to see there. It turns out that the shuttle is actually a working Venturer simulator where visitors can pay a couple bucks to find out how it feels to ride a Harrier Jump-Jet. I also discovered that there was a pretty radical (and dangerous) looking experimental helicopter contraption (X-Ron 1 Rotorcycle Helicopter) hanging from the ceiling. I'm sure that both kids and adults will get a kick out of some of these exhibits. There's plenty of information to go along with all of the displays too.
As far as why this exhibit area looks like a barn? When the Commercial Slip was being planned, The Barn was designed after a typical metal shed-like barn that would have originally been found in the area surrounding the Erie Canal Terminus. It was built as an inexpensive way to house some of the military displays behind the brick museum. It works as an enclosed addition to the Super Yard, mostly featuring items that could not withstand the outdoor elements.
Don't forget to pick up a customized set of dog tags for the '08 Red Cross Mash Bash party while you're there!

BRO’s regular readers know Buffalo is becoming more bicycle-friendly by the day, thanks to a perfect storm of factors ranging from gas prices to the health benefits of regular exercise to how great a summer breeze feels on your face. Well, add another reason to the list: riding a bike can help fight AIDS. “But John,” I hear you say, “how can riding my trusty little blue bike fight AIDS?” Well ok, it probably can’t. But riding the Big Bike on September 18 can. “But Jo …
Now there's a mouthful... I don't think I've ever quite heard of a dedicated day longer than Sahlen’s Dog Days of Summer at Dug’s Dive Day. I guess that the point was made, and that's the important thing. Monday, September 1st is, officially, a day to enjoy a Sahlen's dog and the waterfront... it's a combo deal according to The Mayor. And as much as I'd like to see it (cough, cough), I'm probably won't be able to make it to Dug's Dive in time to see the Sahlen’s World Picnic …
What would it really take to recreate and re-brand the Main Street side of the Main Place Mall? While biking past 'the mall' last night I snapped a couple of photos of the mild disaster that we know as the Main Place Mall. In this day and age, how hard would it be to put a new treatment on that thing? Take down the cheesy awnings, put up some attractive signage, clean the windows, get the clutter away from the windows... there are some usable elements that could be incorporated in …
Starting this fall, a few Johnson Park/Allentown neighborhood people are going to be getting together and running a laid-back movie night. If everything goes according to plan, the idea is to show low budget, obscure b-movies. Our group has begun to conduct preliminary research on movie rights (doing it by the book) and locations. We think that we've found the ideal venue at this point, and for anyone who has ever seen a theatrical performance at the New Phoenix Theater (on Johnso …

i recently took a friend who just returned from the navy threw the park. overall it was well worth the visit. however, i felt that overall, the interpretive elements were lacking.
in the main building, the interpretive signage and exhibits were clearly a in-house, and somewhat homemade affair. the overall impression i had was that the interior spaces were an afterthought (or funding had run out).
the artifacts themselves (ie, a plane, iraqi equipment, maps) makes an imposing and memorable impression. however, without a professional, concise and clear explanation i moved the main building relatively quickly. i imagine that somebody who wasnt a museum nerd or very interested in the topics presented would only give this space a 5 minute visit.
i hope a new exhibit plan is in the works, and this was just a temporary arrangement, although there was nothing to indicate that.
