In an email conversation with Dan Dwyer, a former Buffalonian who now lives in Manhattan and manages the Dublin band Stand, I came across a quote from Hunter S. Thompson: “The Music Business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.” As colorful as Thompson is with his description of an industry that is trying to re-imagine itself for the 21st century (gee, that sounds familiar…), the quote wasn’t surprising to find amidst the rest of our conversation.

Formed by childhood friends in 1994, Stand does not see the floundering music industry as troublesome, but as an opportunity. David Walsh, composer and lead guitarist, says the band measures its success by the “overwhelming buzz we get from stepping on pedals and playing our instruments to the fans we have accumulated, one club at a time. We aren't going away. It's the 70s business model that went away. We write songs, record them and play them live.”

In support of their 2007 album “Travel Light”, Stand will be playing these recorded songs live on Friday night. Travel Light was recorded in Buffalo, where the band was holed up for three weeks at the Holiday Inn on Delaware. “Take four guys from Dublin with a serious lack of cold weather clothing and toss them into Buffalo in February. Trust me, they will get work done,” explains bassist and vocalist Neil Eurelle. “We can't stay out of this town” he continues, “It's our Athens, Georgia.”

Check out what all the fuss is about by taking a listen to “Slave to the Weekend” MP3 above, or better yet, head down to Broadway Joe's (3051 Main Street, Buffalo) on Friday, June 13 and experience their heavily lauded (by the New Yorker Magazine and the Buffalo News) live show for yourself. Doors are at 7:30 PM, and cover is $10.
