Another stitch in the tapestry called Buffalo has been saved. The Buehl Block Building, most famous for its presence in Charles C. Burchfield’s famous 1930 painting, “Rainy Night,” has been transformed into well-appointed apartments with plans in the works for a first floor coffee shop. Reproductions of the painting have been showing up in the local media, and being a fan of Burchfield, it makes me wish that the painting could travel from it’s current home at the San Diego Museum of Art for a visit to Buffalo.

Recently while cruising one of my favorite Hertel Ave. furniture haunts, The Stock Exchange, I happened upon an interesting painting of a Buffalo building that contained many similarities to “Rainy Night.” Though more somber in color, it was the subject of the painting that caused me to pause.

broadwaysfw.jpg It shows a quite typical 3-story Buffalo building, again on a street corner, this time with a lone male figure who appears to be crossing the street. I asked Stock Exchange owner Andy Gay what he knew about the painting. He said he had seen it, loved it and purchased it not too long ago from another dealer friend. It had come from the estate of Buffalo artist Walter Prochownik. “It’s painted on an acoustical tile!” Andy told me, which totally makes sense given the size and unusual square shape of the work.

Andy thought it was an oil, painted in the 1940's, given the style, look and condition of the piece. A pencil-written notation on the back, says “Broadway & N C……..” which we couldn’t quite make out. Yet another similarity as the Buehl Building happens to be located at 36 Broadway.

So BRO Readers; is this building still standing, another remaining piece of Buffalo’s colorful tapestry waiting for a bit of TLC, or has it been relegated to the “shovel ready” world?

Here’s hoping it’s the former...
