Scion Sets Up On Elmwood
We've seen the Cobblestone District turned into a racetrack in order to test out car tires. Now we see an Elmwood parking lot turned into a driver's test site. That's right, during the course of the year, Scion auto manufacturer sets up in the parking lot next to Globe Market so people can test-drive the latest Scion models. Not only that, Scion sets up a road-show to go along with the cars that caravan across the country in search of potential buyers. I'm not saying that Scions are trE cool... I just like the idea that a manufacturer can turn a parking lot into a car buff's playground for a day or two.
Believe it or not, last weekend people lined up to test-drive these cars. I'm sure that most of the drivers never planned on going out to pick up a new car because of the test drive... or did they? A couple of drivers that I talked to told me that they just thought it would be neat to take one of the cars for a spin. It's scenes like this that continue to make Elmwood a fun place to take a walk. The tricked out recreational vehicle that led the fleet of cars was packed to the hilt with driving simulators that test drivers could sit behind while learning about the tech side of each model. So the next time you see this team pull into town and you want to take a Scion for a spin, just sign on the dotted line and hop in!

With a new album hot off the press, this Buffalo folkie chats with Buffalo Rising about the traditional music of New York State, song collecting, and how quitting his day job was among the best things he’s ever done.
AZ: How did folk music, especially historic folk music, become the focus of your career?
DR: Gosh, good question. I wonder that myself sometimes. As I look back, it’s been a long, gradual, even logical progression to this point, but one that I could never hav …

Perhaps you're familiar with public broadcasting and its noble intentions for communal enrichment through music. Or perhaps you just thought about Wayne's World and instead wondered why he wore such a devastatingly tight t-shirt. But if you look you'll see the wealth of opportunity provided for by a national airwave designated specifically for our local ambitions. Buffalo's favorite daughter, Ani DiFranco, is a prime example of broadcast worthy television with …

Oh, so that's where these cars were coming from. I was out on Elmwood a few days ago and seen these cars with the details on the back (all different) and was wondering what was going on. Thanks, and great post queeneyes.

Ya know, I read the headline to this story and thought that a Scion dealer was going to open up shop on elmwood. I find it really strange that there are NO new car dealers in the city. In order for you to buy a car, you have to go to the suburbs. Scion would be a really cool fit for elmwood, and maybe a Mini deaer too?

Balth: dealership in the cityOe fine. On ElmwoodOe makes no sense. HoweverOe it would be a great business-type to put on a more industrial street Oe Niagara warehouse district, maybe? n where there are plenty of surface lots and buildings in need of rehab n plus, 4 lanes of road and few pedestrians. And decent drive-by exposure.

Do you know that the auto manufacturers forced the dealerships out of the city? Take, for example, the Cadillac dealership that was where the Buffalo Savings Bank on Main Street is today. Cadillac forced any dealership below a certain square footage to move to bigger locations or they would be dropped. The dealership had no choice but to move to the burbs (Walden)... even though they did NOT want to. Same with other car manufacturers.

It is like Walmart forcing companies to move to China to produce their products cheap enough before Walmart will carry them. I love corporate America.
Anyways....
I think that is great news for the city and its identity that am auto dealer sees the potential market for new cars within the city proper. Yes we know there is money floating around but for a big national company to say, I want to advertise and promote my product HERE I think speaks a lot to Elmwood's and therefore the cities desirability.
