Notes On Rock Harbor Village

Then, I thought back to Jeff Gabriel and his dream of teaching inner city kids a trade by offering a learn-work program (see post). Like the idea of artistic and functional bike-racks, we need to look at everyday elements in our city in different ways. At the turn of the century there was no holding back when it came to incorporating thoughtful design into developments. These days that same ethic does appear to apply. It's good to see something with some creativity and thought being introduced into something as simple as a fence.
We should have some updates on the new Rock Harbor Village renderings (inspired by BRO viewers) soon.

The City's Lafayette Ice Rink on Tacoma Avenue will be getting nearly $200,000 in city-funded capital improvements according to a statement by Mayor Byron W. Brown.
The money will go toward the first significant infrastructure improvements to the sports facility since it was opened in 1989. In accordance with the mayor's 2009 Capital Budget recommendations to the Common Council, improvements would include $168,000 for the installation of new ice rink dasher boards and protectiv …
Though it’s always hockey season here in Buffalo, winter brings an added glee to the sport – it’s the season the sport was created in. Since the sport was created in the cold of winter, it seems it gains a bit more attention when the temperature begins to drop. Not only does hockey take an added shine, but ice skating in general gets a peak in interest. People want to take their sweetheart to the rink – indoor or outdoor – have those time honored smiles and laughs as the …
Canisius College purchased HealthNow's former headquarters at 1901 Main Street yesterday from Uniland Development Co. The three-story building will be transformed into Science Hall, an interdisciplinary science center. Canisius paid $18.45 million for the building and an adjacent parking ramp. HealthNow relocated to downtown in 2007.
City officials and project partners celebrated the completion of the first fifteen homes at Sycamore Village yesterday. Work started on the project at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Sycamore Street one year ago. When complete, the development will include 20 market rate homes and four low to moderate-income units, many built along a new street, Sydni Lane, and fronting a landscaped common area.

Can someone explain to me what exactly Rock Harbor Village is? I see all these stories on bands playing, or yard sails, and what not, but have yet to really figure out what it is?

Why isnt Buffalo State expanding their dorms? Why didnt Buffalo State buy his property? What is happening with the proposed dorms at the Pearce Arrow Factory Complex?
Why cant the non-academic buildings like track, football/soccer stadiums, baseball fields, dormatories, etc go on the other side of the scajaquada along Amherst and Tonawanda so that lazy tushed Howard has room to expand academic programs.
Buffalo State certainly has a diversity of academic programs, why doesnt it have a small business incubator for its budding entrepreneurs. Last I checked one doesnt have to be a research scientist to be an entrepreneur or have a small business.

The steel fence is great and everything, but is it just me, or do the notes seem a little tacky?

buffaloweiner - Dr. Muriel Howard could teach you a thing about spelling and punctuation. My advice would be: before you slam someone, try not to look like an idiot.

Perry, your comment "Dr. Muriel Howard could teach you a thing about spelling and punctuation"
Well perhaps the incompetent affirmative action quota candidate that sits on her tush because she is black and a woman would be better off proof reading my Buffalo Rising posts than being President of Buffalo State. Certainly Buffalo State would be better off with her gone and so would the Westside, Black Rock and Buffalo as a whole!
Muriel Howard proves my every comment correct every single everyday by doing absolutely nothing of substance for Buffalo State or the surrounding community.
So her paid flying monkeys can mouth her retorts but the lack of dorms, lack of expansion of programs, lack of partnerships with other colleges and local businesses, lack of small business incubators, lack of championing a conference center at the Richardson for the Hotel&Restaurant Management program, the lack of small business incubators, ... its just one sit on your black feminist arse one day after another with Howard.
Burchfield Penny was developed in secret because of Howard Richardson has no Buffalo State champion because of Howard Grant, Tonawanda, Amherst, Forest have no champions because of Howard.
The list goes on...and her inaction on subject after subject speaks more than any image her flying monkeys could ever spin on her behalf.

Weiner69 - That is quite the unsubstantiated diatribe. I am starting to believe that you don't see anything wrong with your comments and you truly believe that she is incompetent because she doesn't see things the way that you do.
Do you have any insight into the manner in which she runs the college? Do you have any insight into how she works with students, faculty, and staff? Any verifiable information on how she handles the budget or deals with State lawmakers?
You are condemning President Howard for not taking over property that the college does not own, for not expanding the campus across a highway to property that is not for sale. You condemn her for not moving multimillion dollar buildings and sports facilities to said property just to make room for more multimillion dollar buildings that are somehow required in your view of Buffalo State.
I don't see the same issues that you see, and I definitely don't agree with the racist, misogynistic and otherwise incredibly inappropriate remarks that you have made.
I hope that you have a strong enough belief in your convictions to schedule an appointment with President Howard, bring your comments and accusations to her attention, and ask for her response. I would love to hear her response to your ignorance and hatred.

like the wizard of oz, you are little more than a flying monkey sent from the castle to provide the proxy retort
I know burocrats and unions and patronage and all forms of public figures and their platitudes, their well spun images and words then when the spin is over its another year...another decade of the status quo. BUT THE JOB OF THE PRESIDENT IS NOT TO RUN THE DAY TO DAY AFFAIRS OF THE COLLEGE AS YOU DESCRIBED.
"while the Vice-Chancellor acts as the day-to-day chief executive."
A Chancellor is the head of a university. Other titles are sometimes used, such as President or Rector For Buffalo State that is John R. Ryan
in other words the Vice Chancellor would be the CEO, the chief operations office handling all the responsibilities that you just claimed for Howard. For Buffalo State that is John J. O'Connor
Further what isnt handled by the Vice Chancellor should be handled by the Deans. Charles B. Kenyon
So as President Ms. Howard should be competent enough to delegate the running of the college and she should be representing the big picture agenda for Buffalo State.
Doesnt own the land along Amherst and Tonawanda, thats funny because I dont know of a single person in that neighborhood that has ever been contacted with interest to sell their property to Buffalo State, nor even a formal request to the City of Buffalo for any city owned property, or any bank with foreclosed property that they could buy cheap.....or even follow Canisius and send out a flyer for a donation of property.
Refusing 10,000 applicants a year, never heard a formal public request to expand the colleges enrollment like UB makes public requests of their plans?
Partnering with other colleges, never heard of a formal public press release on that even though it would do wonders for saving money and both colleges/universities reputations. Is there anything that could life the reputation of Buffalo State more than partnering with UB and other colleges on say another Center for Excellence
Was there a more important community interest that Buffalo State should be involved in together with the surrounding neighborhood than Burchfield Penny and the Richardson. Burchfield Penny was handled in isolation and Buffalo State has no championship role in the Richardson even when a degree program like their Hotel & Restaurant Management Program could make wonderful use of Richardson space for conferences and events.
Even remaining silent on a big picture advocate for say reactivating the Beltway to link Buffalo State to UB, Canisius, Medaille and ECC downtown. It wont go anywhere but its that kind of big picture advocacy that we get from competent presidents but do not get from Howard.
Small Business incubators? Nearly every degree program has a budding entrepreneur and they dont need to be research scientists. An entrepreneur can be a hairdresser or a chef or a website but they still would need help getting that small business off the ground.

Isnt that clever to disguise criticism of her lack of accomplishments, her maintenance of the status quo, her lack of vision for Buffalo State, her isolation from partnerships with the community and other colleges....has hate and ignorance
But your a liberal....so if Stalin said "I didnt starve millions of people to death" as a liberal you would say...ok its all relative...cant we just get along.
Me, I wouldnt care what Stalin said, Id look that the emasciated and dead bodies.
You liberals...care more about words and image....like Howard....but people firmly in the grips of the real world care about goals and accomplishments! Goals and Accomplishments arent something that Howard can say she has achieved while in her position.
You can deflect...she can deflect but one need only drive down Amherst, Tonawanda, Grant and Forest to say....there is big potential...why isnt it happening?
Its flying monkeys like you talking out the butts that provide the subterfuge and deflection so that Howard can spend more time administrating and looking pretty than on her real job of implementing the Buffalo State of tomorrow, while the CEOs (chancelor, vice chancellor, dean) manage the Buffalo State of today!

sex offenders come on down! While i sympathize with anyone trying to make a buck. There is no way this accomplishes anything for the lost end of elmwood. Buffalostate really dropped the ball by not having a project on the books. (Talk about blue note) They have a responsibility towards progress and those juggernaut buildings need to be capitalized on to strengthen our cultural district. i

Buffalostate gives about as much presence to elmwood as the suburbs give to main street. I believe the college has a new dean. And the jock slang of liberal and conservative is something that only matters on television. I respect this project and his ambition to change i just wanted to see the college go in a diffrent dirrection.
