For many years, Dr. Walsh ran an in-home practice at the site, sharing offices with his sister Anna and daughter Marion, both also MDs. To many on the West Side, this section of Porter Avenue was known as "Doctors' Row" in the 1950’s and 60’s. When the practice was closed, Walsh's widow retained the separation of the first-floor space and converted the offices to an apartment.

The current owner fell in love with the flexibility- and near-authenticity- of the home's original floor plan. The owner had potential Bed & Breakfast in mind when purchasing the home but, has instead promoted the apartment as a "Pied à Terre" for business and vacation rental. The fully-furnished and equipped apartment rents for as little as a week or several months- longer on occasion.

Though the exterior had not been "remuddled" by previous owners, the century-old home needed some TLC. The exterior was restored over the course of a few years and in 2000, was recognized with a “Residential Restoration Award" from the Preservation Coalition of Erie County. In 2002, the property was the first Porter Avenue residence to join GardenWalk. Porter Avenue, part of the Olmsted Parkway system, is a National Register of Historic Places street.

whynot- It beats a small condo off Elmwood to YOU. Other people don't want a big house and all the up keep that goes with it. To each his own...

hmmm.... a stunning, spacious, solid/well built, charming home loaded with character and history for $359, compared to a new build with zero charm, manufactured moldings and hollow doors with the same sq footage at spaulding lake for a million. no brainer me thinks....

In 1888, this house was the residence of a "large", prominent and wealthy FAMILY (so many bedrooms per so many kids). There most likely also was much more property around it.

The next actual FAMILY, consisting of a husband wife and child, divided it into a combination of office space and residence, but, that FAMILY still kept it in the FAMILY.

Now, the only way to keep it for a FAMILY'S use would be if the Palin family are looking for a FAMILY residence in Buffalo, NY.

Otherwise, although many big old houses used to be converted into rooming houses, that won't be the destiny of that magnificent mansion; or a B&B either It needs permanance, tender loving care.

    Tourists' attractions: NO to tourists.

Fireplaces. There must have been fireplaces in every major room. Cuddle up. Snug as a bug in a rug. Cozy warmth, dreams, memories...

    And, that gorgeous porch too!!!

Now adays its all about lofts and condos. Lofts and Condos. They're "in". They're "cool". They are acomi'n. It will be 75 years before they might be agoin'. And for this particular mansion, the attraction would be the striking character of the past. Luxury. Preserving a sort of charm that doesn't have to be bygone.

Whatever else is done, no one should do anything to harm or remove any of what looks like Mahagony, Cherry, woodworks too expensive to replace; so filled with character. Filled with the past. This house has memories...

Chrisa: you are SO right. Owner-occupied for 120 years, not "modernized" but, "cared for" — you can't put a price tag on that. Other homes on that block are stunning, too.

comparing this to another large home also for sale close by (symphony circle), i'd say this is a great deal and a wonderful home. this home $349, the Symphony Circle home $649. anyone else confused by that home on Symphony Square? Place was up for sale last year asking $150,000. needed plenty of work. few months later work is done and the asking price is $579....no bites? now its up to $649...OUCH!...and we just recieved a letter from the city saying they are building a garage on the property.

I love this house..its too big for me but I love it....

It also makes me wonder if his house can look so good on Porter then how could the community standbye and let that other house on Porter deteriorate so bad.

Why wont someone look up the tax and title information, find out the property owner and contact them?

If that house was in my neighborhood I would be on the phone with city hall inspectors everyday.

That deteriorating house effects the beautiful Porter Mansions like this!

I would love this house. This is my dream - to have the money for this kind of house and fill it with children. I have always wanted to be a foster parent and adopt the kids who need adopting and give back the kids who can be reunited with their families. This is my dream house - enough space for my birth children and my foster children. Five kids isn't that many - or four kids plus a guest room. Maybe I'm crazy. I'm one of seven and I love it.

Gotta add one last comment on this Queen Anne Mansion...

Did anyone notice the colors? They are as close to period correct as possible.

Notice there is no white or pastel colors...these are all deep shades and medium to dark colors with a very natural and organic look that blends attention to each detail.

Nice job...there are so many homes in Bufalo that look absolutely terrible because of the color alone.

Onestar - Have you been to Spaulding Lake, or better yet the homes around Spaulding Lake? They may not be beautiful Queen Anne Victorians, but these places are top notch with real hardwood floors, intricate molding, magnificent entryway and grand foyers, etc. Judging by the feel of the doors in the four houses that I have visited in that area, the doors are very heavy and solid, based on the bathrooms that I have been in.

I know you love to look down your nose at the suburbs in some weirdly snobbish way, but when it comes to areas of Clarence, Snyder, and Amherst; there are many houses that are as nice or nicer than this one. The upside to those is their location (schools, police, neighbors) and their driveway / garage.

I love this house, it has charm and character, but it is not better constructed or crafted than the houses that you snubbed in Clarence. I would suggest you open your mind to the beautiful streets of this entire area instead of saying "if it ain't in the city then it is crap".

Why would the subject of the "suburbs" enter into any discussion concerning magnificant mansions? There isn't any comparison WHATSOEVER! Duh!

Why not name your homestead after you? Heck. We call ours The __________ Estates--cause it is the biggest house and landmass in our immediate family and has been our home for a long, long time. (This reminds me of how the "titles" Mr. and Mrs. came about--but another time, perhaps?)

There are such sumptuous estates all over the USA and foreign countries, BUT, In WNY, in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, magnificent mansions were built all over WNY without any hint of "subdivisions" ever coming into existance and squeezing in-between!!!

Remember, Buffalo was a prosperious city back when those magnificents were built, with rural areas where other magnificents were also built. BUT< all that happened long, long before any "suburbs" were even a consideration! Duh!

Hmmm. By the mid 20th century 9about the 1950s), why weren't those emerging areas called semi-RURAL??? Hmmm. (Semi-urban means like urban, less than urban and below urban--tighter--less land space--cheaper to build. But, in the 1950s into the '80s, the emerging suburbanites accepted that as better as long as it was outside the city.)

The owners of long-ago built estates knew their neighbors well--they still do-they always will! They were in the same social groups--they still are--they always will be!

Just as the suburbs used to ignore this City, (but can't anymore, so do the truly wealthy ignore the suburbs! Unlike the rest of us in both city and suburbs though, the wealthy have no problem moving on...

As far as schools and police; wealthy people send their kids to private schools world-wide, or, if they utilize the local schools in semi-urban areas, their kids' education was, is, and always well be supplimented beyond what locals have to offer. Incidentally, wealthy people do send their children to Magnet and Charter schools.

Any police personnel anywhere know who to answer to. There isn't any policing problem for the wealthy. The problem arises for the rest of us in lesser areas as neighborhoods go down!

I have an absolutely favorite mansion that I can and do 'trepes" through at will!!! I (we) have been there several times and intend to go there several times more. It has character. It has a history as well as a presence. It is also a castle. It is in the Thousand Islands. It has Heart--ya gotta see Heart--acres and acres and acres of Heart!! (Well, OK, not acres and acres and acres. Visiting there just feels sooo spacious. Actually Heart Island's landmass IS limited.)

at 2700 sq ft (owners unit) and 800 sq ft (apartment) it's really not overwhelmingly huge.

Comp, true, but, people were much smaller in past centuries. LOL

Then again, maybe not so much LOL because--there is a castle/mansion in Canada named Casa Loma. The structure itself was considered huge and stately when first built (whereever it was actually built), but, the orignal furniture including beds are still there, and, lordy, those people were tiny!!!

There are replicas of ships of the Boston Tea Party in Boston, MA, and, lordy, those people were tiny too!!

Put the Casa Loma adults in the Stanton Mansion and they would not even be able to climb the stairs!
