The former Dulski federal building, recently going by the name of Two Hundred Delaware as it undergoes a transformation, has a new name. Meet 'Avant,' which is French for 'forward.'

Developers Uniland Development Company and Acquest Development unveiled the new moniker at a press conference today. Slated for occupancy in early-2009, the completely renovated 400,000 square feet, 15-story building will be feature hotel rooms, Class A office and residential condominiums. The project carries at $63 million price tag.

The revamped property will include a 150-room Embassy Suites hotel on the first seven floors, 128,000 sq.ft. of office space on floors 8 through 12, and 37 luxury residential units anticipated to be priced from $350,000 on the top three floors. Each use will have separate entrances and elevators, but will share many of the Embassy Suites features and services. Law firm Damon & Morey has signed on for two floors of office space.

UniQuest will be showing off plans for Avant during the downtown housing tour, this Saturday from 1 until 5 pm.

    Congratulations Avant.

No doubt, the old Cary family would be thrilled with what you are doing with the place.

Don't care what they call it. They are taking the ugliest of ugly duckling 1970's buildings and turning it into a swan.

A permanent, illuminated sign spelling out Avant will be located on the building's elevator tower, facing south to be visible from Niagara Square, the waterfront and the Niagara Thruway when the reconstruction is completed in mid-2009.

This building is going to be amazing. The views from the condos will be breath taking.

Finally! A sprinkle of modernity to our downtown skyline.

Congrats to UniQuest for designing an 'avant garde' building that will hopefully drown out the hideous nature of their previous project on South Elmwood.

UniQuest needs to find a way to incorporate ground floor retail into 'Avant' and then draw it to street level - Delaware Avenue especially. If they can't physically extend the ground floor of the building to street level then progressive design elements such as a broad exterior staircase ascending from the street to the ground floor could have a mitigating impact on the dreary 1960's setback of the former Dulski Building.

Modernity, is it? You mean, glass, glass, and more glass. Feel your way along the facade with your fingers to find the doors. Nevertheless, in this case, I think the high-rise fishtank is an improvement. But, oh!, the boredom of modern "architecture."

Look at that beautiful glass! That tower going up at the waterfront would look great in this skin!

Pgf1948, you have only yourself to blame for your boredom. Buffalo desperately needs more modern thought and action in every facet of daily life including the architecture.
