More Progress on the 800 Block of Main

Story Options

Work has begun on e888 Maini a new upscale restaurant and bar located at, you guessed it, 888 Main Street. Daniel Campieri, Heather Bennett and Rock Doyle are the owners/operators. The restaurant will be open for both lunches and dinners and have a 58-person seating capacity. They purchased the property from the City of Buffalo for an astonishing $20,000 in July 2005. Luckyis Chinese restaurant, the last occupant of the two-story, 6,718 square foot building built in 1930, closed in the mid-1990is. Offices are planned for the second floor which at one time housed six apartments. No word if the billboard on the roof is staying.

The restaurant joins a block that is seeing a stream of new investment due to its proximity to the Medical Campus, Allentown and Theater District. The Granite Works rehab project anchors the corner of Virginia Street, Hospice renovated a building at 892 Main, and the Red Jacket is re-tenanting its ground floor. All join a block where Hyattis Graphic Supply Co. seemed to be the only viable retail business for several years. 888 Main will also join a growing roster of downtown restaurants. Business First is reporting that the Wickwire Group is contemplating reopening The Cloister restaurant at 472 Delaware which was closed in 1989.

Exciting to see this gloomy block come back to life again. I remember walking real fast down this part of Main St. to get from Allen St. to the Theatre District. Looks like now it wont be so bad anymore and might have some things worth stopping for. Great Job guys.

Thanks for the alert! Little by little we are seeing the rebirth. I think our goal should be one announced project a week (or more) for the next year. We could easily achieve this. The momentum is gaining. Look out real estate prices. Better get in on the ground floor people.

As a native NYC resident, this reminds me of the rebirth through out the late 90's of most neighborhoods that were once negleted ghettos turning around much like most of Buffalo is right now. I am sure our city will become the next Hot Spot very soon for investers, new residences, businesses and more.

I agree with bman..let's keep posting new projects or more every week. This makes me feel more positve about Buffalo, how about everyone else?

I completely agree that Buffalo will be the next Hot Spot. These posts are great. We are looking forward to the guests who are planning to visit this summer...to find out 'what's the catch?' We know they will be as blown away as we were! No catch! As terrific a job that BR does with promoting this city...it is incomparable to actually being here!

Has BR considered working with the Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitor's Bureau in some way to promote our great city to the world? Colaberate with the Conventions Bureau annual Visitor Guide with photos of the city, the new developments (waterfront, downtown revival, etc.) Cleveland and Baltimore's Visitor Guides included new developments two years ago that incourged people to come back and look forward to the new attractions in their cities. This is something to think about?

Also, even have a web link from their website, www.visitbuffaloniagara.com to get updates on current happenings and new projects in Buffalo.

I've seen the inside and talked with Dan about this project- I expect great things here. As I understand it, the cuisine will be Italian and the decor will be elegant- some exposed brick, soft lights- very nice.

The WVRG is also anticipating the opening of Club 31 in the former "Buddies" on S Elmwood and Johnson Park. It promises to bring back the era of the original Club 31 that was so important to this corner of Buffalko decades ago.

I love how these kinds of projects just pop up out of no where these days. In the past there would have been an announcement followed by a long drawn out period of nothing followed by notices that the project needed public funding followed by a need to demolish the building.
