Today, at 11:30 AM the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy proudly launched the first boats of the season on Hoyt Lake. On hand to celebrate was Assemblyman Sam Hoyt and Olmsted CEO, Thomas Herrera-Mishler.

The decision to bring back the boats was marked by the vision of Frank Law Olmsted and William Ballard Hoyt II "who wanted to highlight the beauty of Delaware Park while offering visitors a place for relaxation", said Sam Hoyt. The boats will do just that, allowing boaters to view the beauty that is Delaware Park in a different and fun way.

The boats were designed specifically for the lake by John Montague with the help of volunteers from the Police Athletic League and the Maritime Center. Montage said, "It's important the boats are on the lake, but the real importance was seen through the process of building the boats. The volunteers who helped build the boats worked on them for numerous weekends and were mostly children. Some of the children have never seen a lake, let alone been in a row boat. The experience of building the boats was good for the children's self-esteem and knowing the boats they built will be enjoyed by people for years to come made them extremely proud." Additionally, Montage hopes to add new boats to the lake every year." Hopefully, this will mark boating on the lake as a permanent asset to the Delaware Park.

The best part about the boats on the lake is the great prices; just $10 for 30 minutes and $15 for an hour. Additionally, group rates are available--call 838.1249 ext. 11 for details. You can even go down and rent a boat today, as they will be available until 7 PM. The boats will be available for rental until August 31.

There's a difference between "ineffective" and "effective at stuff I disagree with."

Hey thats a great picture of Sam "never miss an opportunity for a photo shoot" Hoyt.....

On a more serious note, returning boats to Hoyt Lake is a great thing. It adds another reason to come to an already awesome park. Olmsted Parks Conservancy and its new CEO are doing a bang up job with what little resources they have. Clearly one of the best and most successful not-for-profits in the area.

Its the little things that can make such a big difference, well done.
