Due to escalating construction costs and uncertain government funding, AIDS Community Services of Western New York, Inc. (ACS) has cancelled plans for a three-story, 21,000 sq.ft. addition to the Roanoke Building, 206 S. Elmwood Avenue in the West Village. ACS is the largest and most comprehensive community-based provider of HIV/AIDS services in Western New York. The change in plans is expected to have minimal impact on the targeted medical, preventative and tertiary supportive …
When Riverrun and the Humanities Institute of the State University of NY at Buffalo was looking for a fresh environment to serve as a focal point of intellectual activity, the Muse Restaurant of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery seemed like the obvious choice. Starting as early as the 17th century, the salon movement combined food, wine, and relaxed intellectual conversation. The result was that people exercised their minds. What was impressive about the salon movement in France wa …
Submission by Richard (Allentown resident):
I don't know what everybody else thinks about this, but I was shocked to see that The Hyatt has filled in its fountain. Instead of having the water feature in front that became so identifiable over the years, now there is a big pine tree. I am most upset because I had heard recently that The Hyatt was just given a large sum of money to 'spruce' up the hotel. I'm sure that a spruce tree was not what anyone had in mind.
I must say that t …
Ever since we ran this response (letter to the editor) on citizen action, I've received emails from even more people who want to get involved with Buffalo. A couple days ago Lauren Johnson sent an email asking how she could make a difference. We then decided to meet and discuss the opportunities for her (and others) to get involved. Right off the bat, Lauren told me that when she first came to Buffalo she walked out of her hotel (on a weekend) only to discover that Main Street was …

Why would someone want to see a runner up from a show that chose Dat Fan as the winning comic. George Carlin, Sam Kinnison and Mitch Headberg arn't laughing with this show, they are laughing at it.
"DiGiovanni was one of the top ten finalists that season and now is taking her talent on the road."
If she is just now hitting the road, I'll save my 15 bucks for Lisa Lampinelli or Sarah Silverman.
This city needs a real comedy club with true comedic acts. I have a great respect for the comedic art form, Last Comic Standing sucks the life out of it.
The only respectable comic scouts are Belzer and Fred Willard. The rest are NBC actors! The show caries no merit.

I would have to agree that Dat Phan was an insult to the industry as a whole, and more than likely his own mother. In fact, LCS this year is worse than ever before, showcasing props and costumes in lieu of the social commentary and political insight that shaped the genre in the last 50 years (lets not forget that the artform was born out of vaudeville, which was nothing but one liners and ventriloquists) Nonetheless, many a talented comic attempts to get on the show(usually against their own better judgement, and usually they end up promising they won't do it again the next year, but they do)in an effort to further a career, in an art form that is often forgotten. Sitcom television has turned a multitude of comics into cookie cutter carbon copies of each other. Having said that, I know Debra is a GREAT comic, and her LIVE performances are really where she shines. She is not a flash in the pan comic who decided on a whim to try and do comedy. She's a seasoned pro, who was kind enough to volunteer her services to Theater of Youth! In regards to comedy in Buffalo, you have to be a fan, your dream of Lisa Lampinelli almost came true two years ago , but unfortunately Witz End ( Buffalo's only attempt at a downtown comedy club in the past few years) had such low ticket sales they ended up shutting down the week before her arrival. Bills fans don't only watch the Bills when they play the Doplhins, do they? Sabres fans don't skip the games that don't matter, do they? You're right, Carlin and Kinnison would be laughing at the show, of course they would. But don't think for a second that it wouldn't be a knowing laugh, one of " do what you need to get by kid" It's a TV show more than it is a competition, but there are truly some talented people that come out of it, we just get to pick who they are, by checkin them out live. Thats why Dat Phan doesn't tour anymore.

I think the lineup looks really good. (Anyone familiar with these comics knows already.) I agree with kmb any fan of quality comedy in Buffalo wouldn't hate on the DiGiovanni/Ryder/Becker lineup. Already a fan of Silverman, Headberg...Last Comic Standing isn't involved in the show tonight, whatevs.

Almost as painful as an actual TOY production, whatever happened to the $50,000 worth of film projection equipment paid for by some local foundation? Did they sell it off? Rather see a cool old movie anyday!
