Buffalo River Gets A Big Boost!

Buffalo River Gets A Big Boost!

Story Options

Over the weekend I learned that Buffalo River's Festival Park (among other projects along the Buffalo River) received a big funding boost. Especially when these types of projects could suffer from economic pitfalls, the infused funds couldn't have come at a better time. It is my understanding that The City, Riverkeeper, and the Valley Community Association will move forward with the construction of Festival Park, partly due to the securing of a grant fund totaling $874,360. Along with Festival Park, the money will go towards a feasibility study for a new community boating facility as well as to partially fund The City's draft of the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program.

This news follows on the heels of another victorious announcement of the rehab of a nearby Buffalo River landmark. Some day, loft-livers at the The Cooperage River Lofts will be able to overlook the reclaimed Festival Park. This stretch of Buffalo's waterfront is also in close proximity to Tifft Nature Preserve and Times Beach Nature Preserve. The Outer Harbor bike trails are also nearby (as is the unfortunate partially elevated Route 5 debacle). If you can look past the Route 5 plan, then you can see how many of these amenities, such as the Cobblestone District and the Erie Canal Terminus, are coming together to offer people a different vision of our city.

Great news, another place to get a hot dog at the city's waterfront!

I look forward to having a pit stop between downtown and the Outer Harbor now. Since it appears any pedestrian connection is decades off at least traveling down Ohio will be a little nicer.

off topic question: Can a new Michigan street bridge even be possible anymore with the new design of Route 5 now that there will not be any roads on the northern side of the elevated highway?

What was the total cost of this project? Not too high I would presume.

How many hundreds of acres of waterfront land could we reclaim for the public good with such little money? This is simple, yet effective waterfront development in its finest form. This is how we redevelop Buffalo. Good job to all involved.
