Development Update: Club 31

Story Options

31-1.jpg Supper clubs seem to be making a come back. Queenseyes recently let us in on plans for the Scarlet Supper Club on Virginia Place. There,Aeos another one under construction just a few blocks away. Club 31, a 1940,Aeos-style supper club, will be opening next year at 31 W. Johnson Park, corner of S. Elmwood Avenue.

31-2.jpg The building is undergoing substantial renovations and joins the West Village neighborhood that is seeing a considerable amount of development including a new office building at 285 Delaware Avenue, The Church, Niagara Center, Statler redevelopment, Buffalo City Tower, New Era Cap headquarters, Dulski Building redevelopment and the planned rehab of the Greystone Hotel into upscale apartments. Mark Croce has talked about recreating Chez Ami, a popular supper club that closed in the 1960,Aeos. The status of that project planned for Franklin Street is unknown. Nostalgia reigns!

This is certainly a welcome business for this area. Added to the mix of the new Termini project at the Graystone, it would seem that South Elmwood will soon have a more desireable look and effect for the city.

I cannot wait to have supper here! (Though I will sort of miss that fire-engine DJ booth that used to be on Buddy's dancefloor...just kidding.)

    Very exciting! Two things:

    1) Is this the location of the old Buddies?

    2) Can anyone tell me what a "supper club" actually is, other than a fancy word for restaurant?

When I think of a supper club, I think of tables and/or booths in private rooms with heavy velvet curtains for privacy. Remember that scene in Hello Dolly when Louie Armstrong sings the title song? I also think of big bands, swing or ball room dancing. Somehow supper clubs also make me think of pink champagne cocktails.

I have been watching this project closely and it surely has been a major transformation thus far. It's starting to look rather impressive.

WestCoast - thanks for the info.

dak - I DO remember that scene in "Hello Dolly." Nice. But is a supper "club" a private club? Do people have to be members, like with the Buffalo and Saturn Clubs?

" Can anyone tell me what a "supper club" actually is, other than a fancy word for restaurant?"

It used to be a place open only in the evening, and featuring live music and floor shows. Today, it seems to be just another phrase for restaurant.

I think of a "supper club" as a "restaurant" with excellent servce, patrons that don't scarf their food down in fifteen minutes or less, music (live or sound system with a low frequency delivery),and provides exceptional plating along with innovative cuisine based on standard fare.

One I have always wanted to go to (but not on my budget) is Buddha Bar in France, where they start as a supper club with low frequency, slow beat ambient music which eventually transforms into a dance club (music level and beat up).

The best one I had the opportunity to go to could be considered a boutique style supper club. Everything was immaculate, the decor set along the 30's to 40's with an academic feel to the dining area.

Service was supreme, and the food - my first bowl of pumpkin -crab soup was there in 2000. I also enjoyed their flash fried calamari rings with a suace of heavy cream, parmesan cheese, and pepperoncini ringlets.

The plating made you feel you shouldn't destroy it by eating.

The funny thing is the name, although located in York, PA, it was "The Left Bank."

Is this Club 31 actually calling itself a supper club or is Buffalo Rising forcing the use of this phrase? Is Mark Croce calling his Chez Ami a Supper Club?

"Supper Clubs seem to be making a come back" The use of this phrase seems a little pretentious.

31 is being fashioned after the original supper club. To me a supper club means "No Wife Beaters". Wash your hands before you eat. No chicken wings. Leave a tip. Hang up your coat. Make a reservation. Don't act like a chucklehead.

This is the actual location of the original 31 Club, is it not? I do believe that the original 31 Club was known as a supper club. Then it closed down, and eventually became known as Buddies.

Yup, this was the Club 31. As a matter of fact, I'm waiting for the spirit of the former owner of my home to get wind of this. She normally starts making herself known during the holidays and recently, during WVRG Committee meetings as she was quite the socialite that attempted to revitalize the area back in the '70's.

    Have to tell this story...

Last week during a WVRG meeting I noticed a shape out of the corner of my eye along the stairway and front door. Of course, I looked up and then asked if anyone else had seen anything. One of our members saw the same wispy gray shape and I had to assume it was Mrs. Wooley. She loved to have the neighbors over but her husband felt the house was too small to accomodate everyone.

Once she hears her old stomping grounds is back, she'll definitely attempt to get ready "to do lunch." And, I'll have a few extra "wisps" in my sight , again.

So a "supper club" is a place that has "excellent service," "good music," "exceptional plating," "innovative cuisine," "no wife beaters," "no chicken wings," and is a place where you "leave a tip" and "hang up your coat"... that's it?

I've heard of places like that. They're called "restaurants." Have you people ever been to Left Bank? Toro? Tempo? North End Trattoria? Vado Pazzo? Any other number of restaurants in and around the city?

Sounds like David and PaulPops have the right idea - "supper club" just happens to be another (somewhat pretentious?) way of saying "restaurant."

I have been to the Buddha Bar in Paris. Did not know that it was catogorized as a "supper club". There is also one in NYC now. Cool place, great music.

I, too, have wondered about this term "supper club". I rather agree with the writers above who associate live music with such a venue. I think, for example, of a 1940's swing band with singer or singers. The use of the word "supper" rather than "dinner" suggests that lighter fare was served.........Not snack food, of course, but lighter than a full course dinner. I'm thinking here of "Sunday supper", the lighter evening meal following the main dinner served on Sunday early in the afternoon.

I hate the word "supper" for some reason. It really rubs me the wrong way and I always get annoyed when I hear it. I feel the same way about "meal" too. Weird.

Bizzles, I don't think it's weird at all. "Meal" has bad associations - we use the phrase "mealy mouthed" as a derogatory description of someone who refuses to speak his mind in plain terms. And then there's McDonalds who taught me to associate "meal" with terrible, unhealthy food ! "Supper" sounds vaguely blue collar and declasse.

Really, I thought it was more "dinner and a show" kind of thing, round booths with candles, and a bunch of performers doing short skits, very "Cabaret". Now THAT would get me out of the house for longer than just a great meal on fancy china.

BTW - sorry, wcp, I just noticed the address given - it is N. Johnson Park vs. W Johnson Park.

And, can you believe that a former owner of one of the vintage MDs on the Park actually had a buzzer system installed outside the building that says Johnson Parkway? Now, that's someone who could care less about the properties he had purchased or the history of his buildings.
