Do you want to make a difference on your local waterway? Are you looking forward to springtime... and getting outside for some fresh air and exercise? Here's your chance! Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper is gearing up for our annual Spring Shoreline Sweep, April 21-23, 2006. It's a great opportunity to beautify the shoreline and show your appreciation for the environment and your community.
Whether you're interested in volunteering as a site leader, an individual, or you have a school, church or community group looking for a volunteer project, please give us a call! We need help at over 30 sites across the region, so there's sure to be a cleanup going on near you.
We are also seeking donors of refreshments and materials for the event, so please take a look at the attached "Wish List" and pass it on to any organizations that might be able to help.

1. Water and small snacks for all cleanup volunteers 2. Large first aid kits including antiseptic wash and ointment, band-aids, gauze pads, tape, etc. 3. Antiseptic alcohol-based hand cleanser (does not require water, manufactured by Purell and most chain drug stores) large pump bottles 4. Work gloves 5. Piercing emergency whistles 6. Clipboards 7. Sturdy medium-sized cardboard boxes, for site captain materials 8. Rakes and trash pokers, either to borrow or keep 9. Food, beer, porta-potties, stage, sound system, musicians / DJ for volunteer party on Saturday, April 22 at South Park.
Volunteer to help in your neighborhood! Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper is coordinating shoreline clean-ups on the Niagara River, Buffalo River, Cazenovia Creek, Scajaquada Creek, Buffalo Creek, Ellicott Creek, Tonawanda Creek, Cayuga Creek, and South Park Lake.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.

Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.

Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …
