Construction Update: 731 Main Street

Story Options

It would typically be hard to get excited about a one-story renovation project, but that isnit the case with 731 Main Street. Terra Cotta cladding installation is just about complete and the faAade is already glowing. Chris Jacobsi Avalon Development is renovating the former nondescript storefront located next to the Stokes Seed Building he renovated in 2002. Terra cotta is a form of hard-baked clay, either in its natural red-brown color, painted, or with a baked glaze. It was popular in the late 19th century and the 1930is, and is particularly adaptable to rich ornamental detailing. This may be the first new terra cotta building downtown in over 30 years.

In another nod to nineteenth century customs, the planned doorways will be set back several feet from the building line, creating an outdoor foyer. The entry setback will allow for small shop windows that face pedestrians (potential customers) as they walk along the sidewalk. Avalon hopes to attract retail or other tenants to the 9,000 square foot building to serve the emerging residential neighborhood. Get connected: 856-0810.

Great! When will this block of Main be opened to two way traffic? Does anybody have any info on the timeline for cars sharing Main Street?

This block is my favorite one throughout the downtown. There is SO MUCH potential within this block for an urban village of housing, some retial, is plentiful greenery with older trees, and parking. I'd LOVE to see Clover's condo project take-off across the Sidway. That would add more vibrancy to the block and more "potential customers" to encourage retailers to open shop. Way to go.

I bought my first stereo from Purchase Radio at 747 Main in 1979. But I digress...

Great to see this progress. Is there a tenant?

Does anyone know of or want to start a web-sight to encourage retailers to move into Downtown Buffalo? We have the space, residence's (growing), office workers (thousands), tourist (yes, we do all year long), and more. If we can get people to find all or as much as they can on available space, it's price (rent/lease etc) location, build to suite, and more. Then, market it to retailers, post the info for free on such sights as www.buffalo.craigslist.org and or other cities through craigslist.org and more.

Nice street lamp. One upper globe for car traffic and two lower lights for the sidewalk/curb.
