Commercial Slip Opens - Part 2

Before we left to sit on the Pearl Street Brew Pub patio, we talked to one of the people responsible for making sure that the property was presentable. His name was Claude and he was just as excited about the opening of the Commercial Slip as anyone else was. When we first saw him he was busy sweeping the truss of the Whipple Truss Bridge. Later on we ran into him as he was cleaning off the sail from the USS Boston (attack submarine). He handed me a Buffalo Place card and said that he had been waiting for the day that this section of the waterfront would open. Well, congratulations Claude for being one of the chosen few to be able to work down at the waterfront. It's good to know that Claude and Buffalo Place are making the area clean and safe for visitors.

The Niagara River Greenway Commission has a site that allows citizens to voice their opinions on projects before they happen, via a comment section on their site or through land mail.
On deck until October 31st for the City of Buffalo area: Times Beach Enhancements and Buffalo-Niagara Riverkeeper's Niagara River Riparian Restoration Program. Land mail must be postmarked by the 31st to be considered.
According to Executive Director Rob Belue, all of the projects are subject to th …
This project is both a success and a failure. Both productive and counterproductive. I like it and I hate it. And most comment posters are right regardless of their take... reason being there are lots of sides to this story. It completely depends on so many factors, some of which have no definitive proof. Therefore we must rely on speculation, judgment, experience and opinion for much of the basis of the argument for or against.

If you just can't get you're information pertaining to the Erie Canal Harbor quick enough, you may want to check out the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation's new website. There you will find all of the project details as they surface. Need to know what's happening with the demolition of The Aud? Or what the event schedule is for the Inner Harbor? Maybe you're new to Buffalo and want to research the history of the project. If the Inner Harbor is of interest to you, then book …
Sunday was the first time that I ever saw a real live pet blessing ceremony. I had heard of the occasion before, but never really had the opportunity to check one out. This was also the first year that Reverend Drew Ludwig (Lafayette Church) ever hosted a pet blessing ceremony. And the ceremony went so well that attendees are already talking about how to make next year's blessing bigger and better. Drew didn't even know if animals were going to show up since this was such a last m …

We biked down to the area and noticed the security and clean up person. It really does look nice down there and there were a lot of people down there. Like they say in the movie "The Natural", "if you build it, they will come" and I think that this holds true in Buffalo.

What exactly did they build in the Natural? Perhaps if you are going to try and Dennis Miller us with cultural references it would behoove you to know what ou are referencing - can you say Field of Dreams

Where do visitors park ? Do we go to the Erie Basin marina and walk ? My dad is over 80 years old and I wish to get him as close as possible. Thanks for any and all reply's.

Sally - you are correct in Field of Dreams. I was mistaken and quoted the wrong movie, but I don't think that it entitles you to belittle anyone.
Bobbyraz49 - I think your best bet would be to try and park at the first lot at the corner of Marine Dr. It depends on when you take your father down there. I know yesterday it was very packed and people were parked almost all the way down the the observation tower. I am sure that if you didn't mind driving around the parking areas that you could find one closer though. Good luck! It really is nice down there and I am sure your father will enjoy it.

my wife and i visited the slip this weekend. I must say...great progress, but does anyone know if there are plans to get rid of those ugly Marine Dr. apartments in the backround? I think a hotel or better yet, maybe a high rise condo unit or two would attract some buyers! What is the mater plan down there??

RLC...at the very least they could re-do the exterior of the Marine Drive apartments.

I rode my bike down to the Slip yesterday afternoon and between the Canal and the Naval Park, there had to be at least 200 people milling around - I was pleasantly shocked!

There have been discussions in the past to convert/condo the Marine Drive apartments. I'm pretty sure they got nixed because lower income people need water front property too or something like that.

They could just give them all tents and let them use squaw island as their lower income housing :) LOL

It took protest to get this project rolling in the correct direction.
Again I restate the mistake was investing millions in taxes into Bass Pro instead of many historic, small, shop and restaurant venues that could have been marketed to investors. The place screams opportunity. Create urban community not BOX stores on our waterfront.
The historic photographs and explainations do justice and honor to those who founded our community. It is marvelous to see the genesis of a city called Buffalo explained to WNY. It has the flavor of the Roman Forum or Stone Henge. People will come to see this special place. Wait till the national media start writing what is going on. It is people like Tielmann and many others who are not household names who stood up to the authorities that are clueless when they destroy our waterfront, our old buildings and historic parks to build parking lots and strip mall construction.
If you want to know why the marble is missing on the pyramids, or why the Larkin Soap Factory is gone, or why there are highways through our city parks and waterfront just look at those in WNY who are in a hurry to get things done and get them done with grevious dispatch to our cities gems.
The historic component of this project demonstates why more of us have to tell Ron Reinas and his authority to place their truck and car inspection facility in Fort Erie and to not knock down the West Side or encroach in any way into Front Park. Get the trucks and cars away from the waterfront and this city will thrive again for those who live and work here. Build for people and not cars and trucks.
The waterfront is a gold mine but those who lack creativity and imagination can only see malls and srtip malls.
It is a delightful place to go on a sunny day. Outdoor concerts and events will help. Small shops and restaurants will come if the casino doesn't sell or give away food at cut rate prices that under sell the private investors restaurants.

haha, I'm assuming that MJWorthington is being factious. I work downtown, and every time I look at those ugly apartments/projects, it symbolizes the stupidity that once ran this city. Why in the world would you place subsidized housing on the waterfront, when you can get top dollar from Condo/Apartments? If you're getting subsidized housing, then you should have no say as to where you live, and should be happy with what you have.
Tear the Marine Apartments down ASAP!

I agree Magnachef! I moved here from Vegas in 2005 and have fallen in love with Buffalo....however, one of the first things I noticed was that project housing was on the WATERFRONT! What were they thinking? Is there any other city large or small with government housing on a prime piece of land such as this???? LOL...no way! Someone must have been drunk when that got approved!
tear them down and make way for condos!
