Clay Olympics Challenges High School Artists

Wood says, âIn order to keep it to a scale in a manageable size, we decided to invite alumni who are teachers.â Those alumni are Matt Sagurney of Kenmore East, Ann Perry-Smith of Lancaster, Brett Coppins of Lewiston-Porter, and Scott Losi of Pioneer. These four teachers and high schools have participated in this event during its ten-year run, typically involving around 35 students.
âTheyâre just sort of fun events that build camaraderie among the students participating. Itâs a way for these kids to share their love and enthusiasm for the medium,â says Wood.
The students compete in teams, using clay and clay forming methods. The overall team point winner receives a trophy created by last yearâs winner. The contests are timed and include things like forming the most mugs in a certain amount of time, using no hands to put clay on a spinning wheel, the best kiln god, and the tallest and widest vessel form.
The day kicks off with a demonstration by Bethany Krull, an alumna and nationally recognized ceramic artist. Krull will demonstrate her working techniques from 9:15 to 10:15AM. Every year the guest artist gets to be the judge of the competition, so this year Krull will get to decide the winner.
The competition runs from 10:30-12:15, then a break for lunch and tallying, and after, awards are presented at 1:15 in the Upton Gallery. The Upton Gallery will then have an exhibition of student artwork from the participating schools from May 16-23. âI think that the exhibition shows that there is some really strong work being done at the high school level,â says Wood.

Letâs get something straight right off the, well, off the bat, here. Alan Mooreâs Batman: Killing Joke is damn near as perfect a Batman story if ever there was one. In addition to The Dark Knight Returns (Frank Miller, Lynn Varley), Batman: Year One (Frank Miller, David Mazuchelli), Arkham Asylum (Grant Morrison/Dave McKean) and more recently, Batman: Year 100 (Paul Pope, Jose Villarubia), there is none better. Each one of these titles raised the bar on the adult graphic no …
GrĂźvology grooves: Jazz, funk and blues. GrĂźvology is an expression of modern jazz and world beat including a mixture of standard tunes and original compositions. The groove is apparent with or without a drummer. This is fusion.
GrĂźvology members are Walter Kemp III on keys, Bernard Kunz on electric guitar, Efferin Fuse on bass with the accompaniment of Tim Webb, and Dave Phillips on percussion. Created May 2006 as the result of a duo performance by Walter and Bernard …
After living in a particular place for a long period of time, people often take for granted the unique aspects that come to characterize the area as home. I know I'm guilty of this when it comes to Buffalo's own Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
Located a mere mile and a half from my house, I often fail to acknowledge its significance. Recognized as one of the world's leading collections of modern and contemporary art with more than 6,500 works in its collection and a dynamic serie …
Some of the Albright-Knox's favorites are once again be on display, as the Gallery seeks to celebrate their reputation as collectors by re-installing approximately 120 pieces from its permanent collection. Currently on view, the exhibit incorporates paintings, sculptures, and photographs dating anywhere from the 1850's to the present.
âWe are constantly looking for ways to diversify our permanent collection installations and aim to consistently showcase not only "favorites", b …
