Cafe Allegro

There are many concoctions from which to choose. I like The Shorty–espresso, white chocolate, caramel syrup, and vanilla syrup—priced reasonably at $3 for 16 ounces. A few weeks ago I enjoyed one along with a piece of raspberry pie. Life was good with my sweet treats and some time for people-watching. A young woman seated next to me was busy tapping the keys of her laptop, perhaps at work on The Great American Novel. Workers at a nearby daycare were out with toddlers for an afternoon stroll. Across the street, uniformed youngsters scrambled out of St. Margaret School. All in all it was a relaxing way to spend an hour.
I know of no single word to describe the menu at Café Allegro, so I’ll just say it offers a little bit of everything. Among the options are breakfast sandwiches, monster muffins, supersized turnovers, and daily specials. During my most recent visit I had a hard time deciding what to order. Specials included turkey chili, gazpacho, Gorgonzola pear salad, and a spinach-turkey wrap. From the regular menu I selected the Vegetarian Antipasto Salad, composed of lettuce, artichokes, roasted red peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, chick peas and provolone cheese. Delicious, absolutely delicious. I kept my beverage choice simple by trying the house blend coffee. I really liked it, and will be getting it again soon.
Café Allegro is just a cool place, and one that is supportive of local musicians. Check out the whiteboard that lists upcoming events for the month, including Open Mic nights. They open relatively early: 7:30AM Monday through Friday, and 8:00AM on weekends. Brunch is available on Sundays. To conclude, I’ll leave it to their slogan: “Upbeat place to meet.” Right on.

Being in the Bay area and Northern California for the last 2 years, I can see my already beloved Buffalo with new eyes. More importantly, after studying culinary arts and working within the field, I can taste the city with a new palate. I have had the fortunate opportunity to get my first bite of Buffalo at the new Tabree restaurant on Elmwood. My guest and I had the privilege to indulge in an amazing tasting menu off of their abbreviated menu during the soft opening.

There were so many exciting changes this year at the Taste of Buffalo, I was anxious to listen to the bands, watch the cooking demos and taste all of the wonderful food. I had so much fun on Saturday that I went back the next day; the turnout for both days was pretty incredible. The heat and threat of rain didn’t seem to deter anyone from attending the Taste. I saw many people who either watched the cooking demos (to get away from the crowds) for a while or sought shelter on a n …
Buffalo loves its Bills, but does it love brownie bites and fudge swirls? Perry's Ice Cream is hoping so.
The local ice cream maker officially unveiled its newest sports-inspired flavor, Buffalo Bills Brownie Blitz. Kicking off the new flavor with a press conference at Tops Friendly Markets on Elmwood, Perry's Ice Cream and the Buffalo Bills joined together this past Monday to offer media, shoppers and fans a free sample of Brownie Blitz.

While eating lunch today at Romeo & Juliet’s, a strange thought occurred: what would I do if this place ever closed? Have you ever noticed how happy people are when they walk in there? I assume it’s because they know they’re about to have a great meal, and the charming atmosphere doesn’t hurt either (I dig that Italian music).
Anyway, I started to think of the restaurants in Buffalo I couldn’t do without. What if for some bizarre reason I could only choose five plac …

It seems nice enough but you can tell by the signage and other visual clues on these and other city retail establishments that there really is not that much money to go around. The signage is pretty much the least expensive yet still presentable quality.

Would you prefer a red neon sign that fills the strip plaza's all over America. The sign is simple, nice and functional. I don't think has anything to do with the income of the success property.

Unlike other local media outlets, BR doesn't sell editorial.
The YUM channel has a handful of dedicated contributors who are asked to write about food-related subjects with a Buffalo connection. For some of them it is about finding a great ingredient and offering our readers a recipe. For others it is an opportunity to explore the city and ferret out the restaurants that have either never appeared on BR, or do so rarely. It may also be of interest to you that, as YUM's editor, I send our contributors a list of story ideas every few months. These are usually things that I think are topical or are people or places that merit attention.
In this particular instance, BR contributor Todd Schoepflin emailed me to tell me that he'd like to write a story featuring his favorite cafe. Since we haven't covered Cafe Allegro in my time with BR (almost two years), I thought that it would be a good post, a nice opportunity for people to find out about a small, locally-owned business. And it is.
It is our goal to highlight what food-related businesses in the City of Buffalo do best. Mr. Schoepflin has done just that. If you feel that you have something to offer the YUM channel, please feel free to email me--we're always looking for dedicated and enthusiastic Buffalonians willing to spend their own money and time to highlight what they love about the city they call home. If you have any further concerns about Buffalo Rising's editorial policy, please feel free to contact our editor or publisher.
I'm glad that I was able to clear that up for you and any other new readers who may be unclear regarding our mission. It's been this way since before I came on board and I assure you that if we change this policy, we'll be sure to let our readers know. Thank you for your readership.
Happy Eating!

It could be carved, in thicker wood, for example. Or it show some depth of field by having raised lettering. It could incorporate metal like iron or brass. There are a lot of options, but that's fine. Yes, I was hoping for a red neon sign, similar to a wal-mart. You smartly guessed exactly what I meant.

''It could be carved, in thicker wood..:'' Sounds fine for 1970, but will need to change the business name to 'cafe allegro and groovy bong shop'

Okay...enough about their signage.
Cafe Allegro is honestly one of the best local cafe's in Buffalo. Its has a diverse and high quality menu of espresso drinks, salads, sandwich's and desserts. They also have live music, poetry and book clubs throughout the week. Plus their free WiFi is also a plus.
As a North Buffalo resident I've been frequent patron of Cafe Allegro's for years now. It's completely mom and pop owned and a great alternative to large, hustle and bustle coffee houses. Plus, it's located on a great block of Hertel.
It's amazing this cafe hasn't been discovered by BRO (and others) sooner..

Christa why do you always respond to critical posts with the back handed comment of "if you think you'd like to contribute please email me", as if to insult the poster as lazy and to hail your volunteers as higher than all of us readers?
This is the type of alienation you should avoid. Just my opinion. But everytime I read a lousy half advert and the eventual critical comment of it, I can predict you will be right behind with this type of definsive post of your own.
If you can edit or reject some of the crap you are spoonfed then tough beans. Take your lumps.
