Buffalo's Transportation District
If you spend a couple of hours with the Sandoros at Buffalois Pierce-Arrow Museum you will come away with a wealth of information and a better knowledge of how our cityis history is constantly impacting our future. Take for example the recently allocated $3,000,000 wrestled away from the Adelphia fundsOe compounded with a federal grant (DOT) in the amount of $2,000,000 that the Sandoros hope to receive in the near future. With those two monetary injections the project will then rely on foundation sources (among others) to see the plans to fruition. In Jim Sandorois own words, iItis happening alright. Weire on our way to see the expansion of our museum and the addition of the Frank Lloyd Wright Gas Station (image). There are a few other surprises that we have up our sleeves. Those will be announces in the not so distant future.i
Jim walked me over to the recently acquired Upstate Milk operation and explained, iWeire working on the final details, and Iim talking with Western New York Railway Historical Society, but what you see here is hopefully going to be a future Railroad Museum. We already have 3000i of railcars lined up ready and waiting for the space to be retrofitted. The train cars will be exhibited outside and the inside will be dedicated to train memorabilia. Itis a perfect fit in the area, and combined with the Pierce-Arrow Museum we will eventually have our own transportation museum district right here. Weire even looking at the possibility of an enclosed walkway between the destinations. Itis really happeningOe weive got some big plans taking shape in this district.i
This is exciting for sure. If you have never stepped inside the Pierce-Arrow Museum then you may not know what an impact these plans are already having on Buffalo. All of the Sandorois plans are perched on easels throughout the museumOe so if the sight of the pristine car collection isnit enough to get your adrenaline going, then a look into the future of our Transportation District should do the job.

A Kennedy Visits Buffalo

Downtown Free Fare Zone May be Axed
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. The NFTA Santa Ride
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.

I've always wondered why this area along Seneca and Exchange Streets is not used more to its potential. (As if much of Buffalo's resources are!) But if you drive on Exchange Street from Main, there's almost nothing except shovel-ready sites just begging for development. This area is adjacent to downtown (though technically within the downtown "core"). It has easy access to the I-190, amazing views of the skyline...and it's also close to the Larkin at Exchange Building (which has an amazing cafeteria for the office-lunch crowd, by the way.) Chef's restaurant is also in the 'hood. These museums are an exciting and welcomed (potential) addition to this part of the city that is badly in need of some attention! I thought that the museum was closed to the public. The last time I checked the website, it appeared as though it hadn't been updated in more than a year.
I also noticed that the big billboard on Michigan Ave, near the I-190, that advertises the museum is for an event in 2001 or 2002. Is there any way that we could update that?
What can we do to help? Are there fundraising events planned? I am excited to see the filling station constructed as soon as possible.
BTW, does anyone know if this FLW filling station is the same design that Ayn Rand talks about in the Fountainhead?

Lo-tek is an architecture firm out of New York City that has done alot of work using rail containers. They also have alot of good examples of innovative exhibition and event design work. Check out their 'Container Strip' Project. Pretty cool stuff. I would go to a railroad museum if it looked like this. Who needs a billboard when the building is the billboard?!

There is a gas station in "The Fountainhead", but it is designed by the main character, not Wright.
There is a Wright gas station in Clocquet, MN - but it was designed abut 15 years after Rand's book was written.
