Buffalo Books
When I operated Thunder Bay on Elmwood Avenue I sold a lot of Buffalo related gifts. Many of those gifts were books, and if you've visited more dedicated shops like the one within the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, then you know just how many selections are out there. We've covered a bunch of those books here on BRO, but we still have not even touched on the diversity of subjects that the books cover. Unfortunately, some of the titles, such as Steve Powell's Rushing the Growler, are not currently available, but as the interest continues to grow regarding our region we will hopefully see select books come out of retirement.
Then there are books like Bodyslams in Buffalo, Buffalo Bicycles, Church Tales, Crystal Beach, Don't Bother Knockin'... This Town's A Rockin', A Ghosthunter's Journal, John D. Larkin: A Business Pioneer, Snow Trails, Through The Mayors' Eyes, and Uncrowned Queens... books that may be a bit more obscure than Classic Buffalo, but make a huge impact when relaying historical instances and memories pertaining to respective subject matter. There are books for climbers, skiers, gardeners, historians... and they are all available from a company called Buffalo Books (Western New York Wares). I have listed most of the books below, with short descriptions, but in order to see full descriptions and photos, along with order forms, just click on this link.

What could be more perfect to spread the news about local artists at the Buffalo Indie Market than a literary magazine that features works from local artists? NOMAD is a new magazine set to debut in January 2009 that will feature writers, poets, photographers, artists, and designers from the area. Erica Eichelkraut, a freelance photographer, created NOMAD and is bringing it to the public. Since Eichelkraut is a part of the Buffalo Indie Market, it wasn’t long before a collaborat …

I think a book that was omitted is "High Hopes: The Rise and Decline of Buffalo, NY" It describes the years of poor decision making that lead to the rapid decline of the city from 1950-present. It gives readers a perspective on why this city was once so important but has now turned into an industrial wasteland through years of poor planning and big government.

I've searched all over to find "Rushing The Growler" and cant even get a used copy. Does anyone know of where I might find one? I was told to purchase it on the Buffalonian website through Amazon but they dont even have it. My next step will be to try Old Editions bookstore. Thanks

I'd like to plug a fantastic local bookstore, the Book Corner, in Niagara Falls. It carries all of the Buffalo Books titles and much, much more. I am sure he has Rushing the Growler. If not, you should ask Buffalo Books (Brian Meyer) directly.
i guess no one knows about this store because it's on Main Street in Niagara Falls, just north of the library.
This is my favorite bookstore in WNY. They will order anything you need. Plus, they have a fantastic used section.

"Rushing the Growler" is out of print, so try used - rare - out of print book websites like Alibris, Bookfinder, and ABE.com. I think "High Hopes" is still in print but is neither published nor distributed by the firm featured here, Western New York Wares, hence its omission. We are lucky to have more than one local publishing company in Buffalo. Some cities have none.

Old Edition's is an amazing place. You don't know Buffalo unless you check it out...nicest people, too.

Mark Goldman's other books: "City on the Lake" and "City on the Edge (due out shortly)" should also be marketed. Good Buffalo history right there.
