BRO's First Summertime Post

Going though my photo collection the image of this house caught my eye because it exudes summertime warmth. I felt warm just looking at it. Bathed in summery light this elegant white Victorian North Buffalo house with its delicate decorative features creates an age-old image of summer. The Fourth-of-July banners help to finish the scene. It is a good reminder of those beautiful carefree Buffalo summers. So hang on Buffalo. Summer may seem like a distant tease that is not quite real but, it will be here and it will be glorious. You can believe!

BRO’s regular readers know Buffalo is becoming more bicycle-friendly by the day, thanks to a perfect storm of factors ranging from gas prices to the health benefits of regular exercise to how great a summer breeze feels on your face. Well, add another reason to the list: riding a bike can help fight AIDS. “But John,” I hear you say, “how can riding my trusty little blue bike fight AIDS?” Well ok, it probably can’t. But riding the Big Bike on September 18 can. “But Jo …
Now there's a mouthful... I don't think I've ever quite heard of a dedicated day longer than Sahlen’s Dog Days of Summer at Dug’s Dive Day. I guess that the point was made, and that's the important thing. Monday, September 1st is, officially, a day to enjoy a Sahlen's dog and the waterfront... it's a combo deal according to The Mayor. And as much as I'd like to see it (cough, cough), I'm probably won't be able to make it to Dug's Dive in time to see the Sahlen’s World Picnic …
What would it really take to recreate and re-brand the Main Street side of the Main Place Mall? While biking past 'the mall' last night I snapped a couple of photos of the mild disaster that we know as the Main Place Mall. In this day and age, how hard would it be to put a new treatment on that thing? Take down the cheesy awnings, put up some attractive signage, clean the windows, get the clutter away from the windows... there are some usable elements that could be incorporated in …
Starting this fall, a few Johnson Park/Allentown neighborhood people are going to be getting together and running a laid-back movie night. If everything goes according to plan, the idea is to show low budget, obscure b-movies. Our group has begun to conduct preliminary research on movie rights (doing it by the book) and locations. We think that we've found the ideal venue at this point, and for anyone who has ever seen a theatrical performance at the New Phoenix Theater (on Johnso …

rising,
I am glad you feel like that--I can't agree completely, however. The air is so humid in buffalo, you could walk on water and not be religious--that said, I miss Buffalo summers immensely and a nice electrical storm.

buffalo summers are gorgeous and 5 or 6 degrees cooler that areas even further north .the humidity is not bad overall. the lake helps a lot.mm jazz's perception is not in tune with my perception. even without the humidity allsouthern and midwestern cities are just unbearable in the summer. having lived in florida and the southwest i can tell you that 95 degrees + with or without humidity is fricken brutal. dont buy that dry heat bs. http://www.livescience.com/health/060621_sweaty_cities.html good link

Yeah, there's always that day in July with 90 degrees and 90% humidity, but you get that everywhere east of the Big Muddy so book a trip to Aspen when you see it coming or better yet, open the windows, turn up the fan and watch the 1959 version of "Cape fear".

When I was back home last year the first week of July for Buffalo Old Home Week I couldn't resist rubbing it in with my co-workers back in Vegas. My weather station I have at home recorded mean temperatures of around 100 degrees every day with highs rannging between 110 to 117 degrees while I enjoyed temperatures in the 70's and low 80's in Buffalo. Even with 68% humidity it felt great.
With the exploding population and more and more streches of parking lots and black asphalt roads the temperature has continued to rise on average in Vegas, they call it the "heat island" effect.
Oh yeah, it's a "dry heat" alright-- well, the inside of a blast furnace is a dry heat, too!

High humidity?!?! SIlly people, try living in the south. One of the main reasons I wanted to move back here was because it's so heavy and hot down there! Arkansas has a nice Spring and Fall otherwise it's brown, hot and humid or brown, cold and humid. Also, the Southern Tier or Lake Ontario are great places to escape the heat here. Also, what's wrong with March!?! It rocks February's face off, at least some weather happens in March huge extremes, 60 degress to 0 degrees. Feb is like the big lame chill. I bet we skip most of Spring again this year and hit Summer in mid April. Thank you global warming......
