Another Downtown Project Brewing

There is a residential development in the works for Ellicott and Oak streets south of Ellicott Commons and IS Lofts. According to several sources, an out-of-town developer is working to piece together a project in the emerging neighborhood east of the Theater District.
The developer is said to be planning a mix of renovation and new construction, including a mid-rise component that could reach ten stories. One Ellicott Street property owner that was approached about selling, and has thus far declined, says the buyers are eyeing retail, rental, and condominium uses. A well-known local architect has been spotted scoping out properties in the block, a sign, or not, that a deal is eminent.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

wow what a vague article. So basically there is an outside chance that somone might build a condo somewhere in that area that might have some residential units. With the property owner unwilling to sell I highly doubt this gets done. Until there is more information about who the developer or the well known architect is, then this really isn't news.

I took it as a gossipy-rumor article - nothing wrong with that. I hope this project sees the light of day.

As much as I like Buffalo Rising, I don't think it should act as a rumor mill if it wants to be considered a reputable source of news about the past, present and future of Buffalo.

ditto steveP. let's get a little more evidenced-based before publishing an article that is so vague.

Wow, haters United!
What’s the big deal that they informed you of potential development brewing? So let me understand this you come to this site for information however it must be censored for you? Therefore until there’s a shovel in the ground its not reportable…..I don’t think BR knows any more than what they wrote and that’s more than you or I knew before. Thank You BR for the information

I enjoy the articles by BRO, especially the ones by West Coast, but stuff like this is pretty useless. Tell me what block, what owner, what developer. Buffalo Rising could easily market itself as a second source of print news besides the Buffalo News and almost make this town a two paper town, but articles like this won't cut it.
To Kip, I'm not hatin' I just want real news and not a gossip mill. If I want gossip I'll go to TMZ. I appreciate the efforts that West Coast puts in, but I just wanted more info. (Which I did receive through an e-mail. Kudos to him for that) I just think BRO sells itself short with articles like this.

I know WCP personally and I can vouch that whoever his sources are they are mostly very reliable, first hand, and fact based, especially if he posts it on this site. He has fairly high standards about the stories he posts...you should hear some of the rumors that don't have enough reliable sources to be posted! haha

"Loose lips sink ships."
BRO should stick to the facts rather than rumors. Such rumors accomplish more harm than good. I personally know of TWO (count that TWO) different businesses that are scheduled to open that are purposefully trying to stay off the radar of BRO until they actual open their doors. Both business people feel that premature leaks and rumors make essential preliminary work more difficult to accomplish - especially in a small pond like Buffalo.
Kip have you ever put your own capital at risk in any substantial development/business? If you had, I think you would reconsider your harsh tone towards those who suggest caution and responsible reporting.
BRO editorial staff should urge more restraint in more responsible, accurate and fair reporting - even if they report facts that don't fit into the Pollyanna dogma that plagues some who circle this site like vultures looking for the next juicy meal.

Some people here are just negative all the time. DSB if you don`t like it,, why come on here. Start your own site then. WCP is a great part of this site. BRO keep up the good work, and don`t listen to all the people that think they know everything, like DSB, SteveP they should get a life

Who cares if it is only a rumor. Issa buying the statler began as a "rumor" BRO and WCP do a good job digging up possibie developments. That is the reason I log in every day.

Typical WNY response on these boards; the "if you don't like it leave" attitude... Forget about making positive change... just go along with the cult, shout out the approved slogans but dare not to ever think or ask critical questions. SLEEPL8/BSJava are "old" Buffalo in a shot glass.
B(ull)S(h*t)Java have you ever opened a business??? I doubt you have... Rumors have a chilling effect on projects that have yet to get off the ground. I know for a fact of TWO projects that fear being mentioned on this web site because of the unintended consequences rumors have. There are very good reasons most project negotiations are held in private away from public discourse.
What is negative about demanding facts and being responsible with what is published? I would expect more from a publication that is one of Buffalo's premier websites. Pollyanna attitudes will NOT bring about positive change. Ethics and the respect for accuracy are qualities that seem absent from BRO lately.

"Ethics and the respect for accuracy are qualities that seem absent from BRO lately". UM I guess that doesn't stop you from coming back does it? DSB the question is,, have you ever opened a business? Everyone can say they have, but prove it that you did !!!!
