This Storefront Is Now A Beacon

Story Options

It was so nice to see this Main Street storefront on my ride home last evening. Up until recently this space, like so many others on Main Street, was dark and empty. Now it glows red and actually has some printed works of art inside. The difference is, simply put, brilliant. The small change to the LL Berger building is refreshing - this was not an expensive endeavor, but the bang for the buck is what counts. And this beacon might actually attract a real live business someday.

In order to see more of these types of windows pop up on Main Street (or any other dead windows downtown), there must first be an interest from property owners. As we have seen in the past, the best way to draw any sort of business to a location is to offer a clean, ready-to-go storefront. I think that was accomplished in this LL Berger storefront. And if the space doesn't move, at least the visual appearance sends a signal to passersby that the building is there, the neighborhood is alive, and there is an artist who understands the importance of marketing his or her works of art.

I’ve got an off the wall idea, since there apparently is no rush for shops looking to filling these storefronts – why not rent them. Light up an empty storefront window and advertise your product or service as a as in this example. Granted the space would probably be empty behind the display but the cost would be minimal and cheaper than any billboard. Most would be viewed by daytime workers walking by but with a large number of fronts lit up people will come to look and when Main Street finally gets traffic back maybe stores will actually come in and locate behind their displays.

Well just like when trying to sell a house (take that TV show for example 'Sell your House") If you want a buyer, you MUST make your property look presentable enough that even you would be interested in it. If it looks like a dump why would anyone want it? Good story, queenseyes. And some great points made in the linked story where the woman was shopping around for retail space. So many of these downtown propertys sit rotting away, creepy and even stinky from years of neglect. No wonder they can't find retailers to take them, many cannot afford the rehab work to even put a business in them.

DIdn't a store open right over there with much fanfare from Queenseyes a few years ago, which has since closed? I think the store was called Get Dressed and Queenseyes referred to the owner as an "urban pioneer."

What DID happen to 'Get Dressed'? one day it was open, the next day it was gone and noone at BRO mentioned it. And what's the status on 'Marcell by Chayban'? Is it open in the Ellicott Square yet? Is it still coming or not?
