Toot toot! Everyone get on board at BECHS for Train Day! This annual event is set to take place the Friday after Thanksgiving, giving families an alternative activity to shopping or sitting around eating turkey sandwiches. Come on out and see a very impressive train display as well as other train-themed family activities. You don’t have to be a train enthusiast to have some great fun and to learn something about model trains.

Train Day marks the beginning of the holiday run of the “Rail Barons” display. The display has over 200 feet of track, a scale Erie Canal lock, a hundred different buildings showcasing the Buffalo and WNY area of the 19th century, and model trains in the style of 1900s replicas. This miniature city will put Thomas the Tank Engine to shame and really thrill the kids as they watch it travel down the tracks.

Guests will get to enjoy the display and activities as well as gaining access to the other exhibits the museum has to offer. Though the “Rail Barons” d…

Grab Some Pine and Enjoy the City

West Coast Perspective

Pity the bench. Home to pigeon feeders, transit riders, vagrants and failing athletes, the bench gets a bad rap. But as street furniture, it serves a useful purpose. The Toronto Star’s Christopher Hume recently gave city street benches some overdue love.

The Buffalo/Charlotte Connection

queenseyes

Do you know a Buffalonian who now lives in Charlotte? Do you know someone who is moving back to Buffalo from Charlotte? What are your thoughts on the city? Good feelings? Bad feelings? It was as recent as 2007 that some reporters in Charlotte decided to conduct a study to find out where many of its new residents had come from. Buffalo, it turned out, was a surprisingly large source of transplants considering that it's a mid-sized city. With so many Buffalonians living in Charlotte, the city's NPR radio station, 90.7FM, wanted to air a series on the phenomenon. Reporter Scott Graf decided to poke around in order to find out what brought so many Buffalonians to Charlotte. Were they happy living away from Buffalo? Did they miss their hometown? Were they sticking around or heading back home?

In this on air series, Scott talks to …

Clinton Says Hold On

Elena Cala Buscarino

After all of these news sources reported that Clinton had accepted the secretary of state position, the attached press release came out of her office.

It was reported as recently as this afternoon that nothing would be decided until after Thanksgiving, but then the rash of news alerts poured in saying that it was a done deal.

I suppose we'll know soon enough, but in the meanwhile the speculation continues. Don't let that stop you from commenting on the ramifications such a move could have on Buffalo.

Hillary Clinton Accepts Secretary of State Nod

Elena Cala Buscarino

The New York Times has reported that Hillary Clinton was offered the secretary of state position by President-elect Barak Obama, and she has accepted.

What does this mean to Buffalo? This past week, Eileen Buckley of WBFO interviewed both Mayor Byron Brown and Congressman Brian Higgins about the "ifs" involved in Clinton's move to secretary of state. It's been rumored that if she did accept the nod, Brown or Higgins would move to her senatorial seat.

Brown was guarded in the interview with Buckley, saying that he'd listen if [Governor Paterson] called him, but that he had no plans to make the leap out of Buffalo and back to a Senate seat, this time representing the United States, rather than New York. Higgins, on the other hand, answered…

Life in Buffalo and Buffalo in Life: Google It!

Elena Cala Buscarino

Google has teamed up with LIFE Magazine and the result is a fantastic archive of Buffalo images from the photographers of LIFE.

"This effort to bring offline images online was inspired by our mission to organize all the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful," Google software engineer Paco Galanes said on the Google blog.

And aren't we happy for that? Newly digitized pictures of Buffalo that haven't surfaced for decades (and several more that never made it out of the darkroom) are available for viewing, and here's the really good part--they can be downloaded for free and used, as long as it's not for financial profit. In addition, LIFE offers

Sheldon Berlyn's Dramatic Movement

Sandra Williams Gordon

Color, form, shape, light, movement, relationship, exploration, playfulness, line, structure, vibration, expression, response, gesture, flow…

These are just some words that can describe both the artwork and the process of respected artist, Sheldon Berlyn.

Born in Worcester Massachusetts in 1929, Berlyn studied at the Worcester Art Museum School and at Yale's Norfolk summer School of Music and Art. He also studied with Herbert P. Barnett, under whose tutelage Berlyn developed his strong sense of structure and drawing skills.

In 1958, Berlyn became a faculty member at State University of New York at Buffalo, where he taught painting and drawing for over 40 years. Upon his arrival in Buffalo, Berlyn's work took a dramatic turn from working in the traditional methods of drawing and painting. His artistic vision changed, in a large part due to the Albright Knox, where he dis…

Global Warming at Home

Great Lakes United

With the first real snow of the season hitting Western New York, it may seem ironic to discuss global warming, but it’s a real phenomenon. Global warming won’t stop snow from falling in Buffalo, but it is, and will continue, to change the climate and Lake to which we are accustomed.

Often when you hear about impacts of global warming, the focus lies on the oceans’ coast and areas predicted to disappear below sea level as polar ice caps melt and the oceans warm. We’ve already witnessed the massive losses in a city like New Orleans when water levels rise temporarily, and so such predictions can really stick in your mind. And we’ve heard speculation about what could happen to countries that lies entirely below the sea level like the Netherlands or Bangladesh. But what you don’t hear about as often is what will happen to the giant body of water here in Western New York.…

Dinosaur Stalks Buffalo!!

RaChaCha

Ten years ago, the downtown of My Fair City was forever altered when a Big Dinosaur appeared on the scene. Thankfully—unlike 1950’s Tokyo—when this dino showed up our downtown wasn’t flattened, but considerably improved. Dinosaur Bar B Que, a restaurant that originated in downtown Syracuse in the 1980’s, planted its foot in downtown Rochester in 1998. It was an instant hit—it’s common to have a line waiting to get in at all times. And it’s clearly Hog Heaven—for a decade now thousands of Big Bike riders have roared into our downtown and opened their wallets. It’s provided economic development, made downtown more of a destination, and put feet on the surrounding streets. And with all that delicious BBQ aroma drifting around, our downtown even smells better!

The Rochester location is especially nostalgic for m…
