What: Great BANANA Blackout Where: 1119 Elmwood Ave Corner of Elmwood and Forest When: 5:30PM

In an effort to support transparent development processes and a better Buffalo, the members of WNYMedia.net and BuffaloRising.com have joined forces to rally the community around the construction of the Wyndham Hotel at the corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues.

In the last several years, progressive business and residential development in the City of Buffalo has been hindered by the emergence of groups that have been dubbed as NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard) and BANANAs (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything).

As promised, here is your installment of beer reviews for July. Maybe you've missed it, but it's been pretty hot. On days like we've been having lately, nothing satisfies like a good beer- especially if your work makes you sweat. ok, well-and-good, (we all knew that,) but what are you having? Please be so kind as to let me throw a few options at you...

BTF President Phil Rumore lobbied for an alternative school for troubled kids. Now that the school is about to open, Rumore is jeopardizing its chances by refusing to let the district hire through an interview process rather than according to the rules of seniority.

Rumore puts his finger on the problem without knowing it.

Rumore said those comments are "insulting," since only teachers interested in working with troubled students would apply to teach at the new school, which will initially enroll 445 students in grades 7 through 12. In cases where teachers do not work out, they can be transferred by the principal or - more ofte…

CEPA Gallery is doing something that is pretty cool. They want to arm re-pats with cameras and show select photography at a gallery opening. What a great idea. Think about it... for those that have lived in Buffalo for a long time it would portray images of Buffalo through the eyes of someone that has come back. And it would show ex-pats …

Looking for a Building

queenseyes

CEPA Gallery is looking for a few buildings in downtown Buffalo on which to display large public works of art, and they're looking for your help. Do you own a high profile building or know someone that does? The artist, Suzanne Opton, utilized a series of billboards in Syracuse to promote her show and now it's Buffalo's turn to sh…

A while back the gang behind Buffalo Old Home Week asked re-pats (ex-pats that have come back to their hometown) to write down some reasons why they have returned to Buffalo. The short survey was designed to find out where they went, how long they had been gone, and why they returned? There was also a comment-field where re-pats could spell out what Buffalo meant to them while away from home... and what it means to be back. Some of the people that responded had not even moved back yet, but were excited about the possibility. The stories are interesting, the enthusiasm is catchy, and we thought that it would be cool to sh…

I was intrigued when I saw some media coverage of the Guitars for Hope campaign that is aimed to benefit: Hunters Hope, Kelly for Kids, and WNED. I cruise to work the next day & discover that some of the guitars are being displayed in our atrium (no such thing as coincidence). I think to myself- time for a much over-do BR article; what a fun way to learn more about this public art project and at the same time meet a contributing artist. One of the guitars immediately caught my attention so I contacted the creator and set up an interview. When I sat down with Tony Mauro Sr. I was all set to cover the public project, the genesis of his creation and some of his other Buffalo endeavors. What morphed instead is pretty special.

West Coast Perspective

Most Buffalo lovers hate the term eshovel-readyi and with good reason. It is the term property owners and officials love to use to justify demolition of property, usually downtown. Believe it or not, Buffalo IS lacking shovel-ready land. Not for office or residential projects, but for new industrial development.

If you are lucky enough to own or live in one of Buffalo's extraordinary Victorian houses it is very likely you also have a large front porch with wonderful crafted detail and exceptional views to the unfolding street scene beyond. To me these porches are one of the very extraordinary features of Buffalo. I hope to do a few posts that focus …
