Right On, Donn!
Joan Fedyszyn
Donn Esmondeis column today in the BNews listed the MANY things that have gone right in Buffalo. I love articles like this, rather than the iif it bleeds, it leadsi nature that is frequently featured.
He talked about the Chip Strip & nearby neighbors, Sheais & Studio Arena. It made me think of a symposium that I attended in the fall at Nichols School sponsored by iSmart Growth.i The speaker discussed the recent development of ilife style centers.i He cited a few, newly created sites built in suburban areas and what criteria made a ilife stylei center successful. Only one, the Easton Center in Columbus, OH, was designated so.
As I sat there and listened to the eveningis discussion, this thought crossed my mind, "Isnit downtown Buffalo already a ilifestyle center?i
Rubies are red Sapphires are blue, and pink and green and yellow and violet andOe
During a recent visit to Abrahamis Jewelers, corner of Elmwood and Auburn Avenues, I learned from owner John Abraham that sapphires come in nearly every color of the rainbow n except red, thatis a ruby. He carries this fun and dazzling bracelet (above, center) with over 6 Ohm karats of fine fancy colored sapphires and diamonds ($3,129). (left: 18K white gold, very fine sapphire & diamond necklace, $1695. right: 14K white gold and diamond necklace $495)
John may seem like the new kid on the block as he has only been in his…

This one is on Virginia Street just east of Delaware. All I can say is wow! This building has all kinds of romance and mystery and its dark coloring gives it an edgy spookiness. It originally housed a photographer's studio and once had a large skylight running up the long sloped roof. Tell tale signs of this skylight can still be seen if you look closely. I believe the building is currently used for offices.

It would typically be hard to get excited about a one-story renovation project, but that isnit the case with 731 Main Street. Terra Cotta cladding installation is just about complete and the faAade is already glowing. Chris Jacobsi Avalon Development is renovating the former nondescript storefront located next to the Stokes Seed Building he renovated in 2002. Terra cotta is a form of hard-baked clay, either in its natural red-brown color, painted, or with a baked glaze. It was popu…

Did you know that Buffalo's Grain elevators played a major role in the development of what became known as modern architecture?
It is commonly known that Buffalo played a major roll in the formation of early modern architecture when two monumentally important buildings went up within a few years of each other. The older of these is the masterpiece Guaranty Building. Perhaps Sullivan's greatest achievement, its stunning vertical lines …

Carl Paladinois Ellicott Development has plans for two of the four buildings it owns in the 1000 block of Main. One involves a demolition, the other is a conversion of a former gas station to a Quiznois. The firm purchased 1008, 1010, 1028 and 1030 Main in a series of transactions over the last two years. They include the former homes of Dowd Rental and Bryant and Stratton College (the three-story and four-story buildings pictured here).
The Cityis Preservation Board…

Work has begun on e888 Maini a new upscale restaurant and bar located at, you guessed it, 888 Main Street. Daniel Campieri, Heather Bennett and Rock Doyle are the owners/operators. The restaurant will be open for both lunches and dinners and have a 58-person seating capacity. They purchased the property from the City of Buffalo for an astonishing $20,000 in July 2005. Luckyis Chinese restaurant, the last occupant of the two-story, 6,718 square foot building built in 1930, cl…

How did Buffalo get its name? To the best of our knowledge here at the Convention & Visitors Bureau, the three theories given most credence are as follows:
The most widely-disseminated (and romantic) theory is that the early French explorers of the area came upon the Niagara River and christened it "Beau Fleuve" or "Beautiful River." Over time, the areais English-speaking settlers began to pronounce the word as "Buffalo." Also given credence by local historians is the possibility that an interpreter mistranslated the Indian word for "beaver" as "buffalo" - the words being very similar - at a treaty-signing at present-day Rome, New York in 1784. The theory assumes that because there were beaver here, the creek was probably called Beaver Creek rat…

I wanted to hold off judgement about Marv Levy being General Manager until after hearing his introduction first. I must say, it is refreshing to hear the GM tell it the way it is instead of the usual BS that we have been fed the past 5 years. There were about 2 hours in between press conferences yesterday when I thought I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Donahoe was fired, Marv was coming back at some capacity and the future of the head coach was in doubt. Then, Ralph Wilson announced that Mike Mularkey would remain the head coach and darkness covered the land once again. I suppose that at the very least, fans will not be EXPECTING to make the playoffs next year. There will be no false hopes as we can all look forward to another heavy do…

The film website proper is up and running. There you will find small and large versions of the trailer, production stills, and pictures of the cast and crew. We are 45 minutes into the first cut of the film and expect to have a complete first cut by mid-January. There is talk of holding the premiere at the terminal. That would be great fun. I am also working on the sequel and in talks with a number of distributors interested in ma…
