Glimmer of Hope for Cobblestone Complex

West Coast Perspective

Lost amid the relief (and justified disbelief) that Ellicott Development was proceeding with plans to renovate the Greystone Building, was the disclosure that the firm is still considering converting the former Fairmont Creamery (aka Arctic Freezer) in the Cobblestone District to lofts.

The eight-story brick building located at 199 Scott Street was built in 1920 and has been vacant since the mid-1990is. A residential conversion project was proposed by Ellicott for this and t…

First of all, I would like to start off by saying that nobody wanted to write a more positive article about the coaching hire than myself. I was hoping that things would be different heading into next season. Well, I can honestly say that everything positive that stood for Marv Levy came to a crashing halt Sunday night after discovering that Dick Jauron was going to be the Buffalo Bills next head coach. Wasn't the horrible flaw with Tom Donahoe the fact that he could not cut his ties with the Steelers organization? Did he not hire people that he knew would never challenge his authority? Now it is Marv Levy who has hired the lesser candidate because of his ties from Chicago and the good ole' days. Nobody cares that Jauron has a similar personality …

Earlier last month, the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) was awarded a monetary gift in the amount $50,000 from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundationis Active Living by Design (ALbD) program (these highly competitive dollars were made available through the Special Opportunities Fund to ALbD grantees). The money is to be designated to a BNMC proposal called "Art Scape", which will ensure that public art is tied into current and future campus development. This is fantastic news for both the medical campus and the art community.

If you live in the city of Buffalo and have little kids (aged 1 - 6) then this post and isurveyi are for you.

When the weather is too cold or wet to play outside with your preschoolers, where can you go to blow off some steam, have some fun, interact with other families, and maybe even learn a thing or two all within city limits of Buffalo?

Hmmm, current indoor options have their limitations: Camp Wee Explorers at the Buffalo Museum of Science, ($, for ages 2-7, only open Wednesday n Sunday); The Living Tree House at the Buffalo Zoo ($, only open Wed-Sun, …

If not let me fill you in.

Buffalo is poised to add an important new gem to its architectural crown. The State recently announced that it will be providing $7M in funding for construction of the Darwin Martin House Visitor's Center. The Center is slated to be constructed adjacent to the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Darwin Martin House starting this summer if all goes according to plan. It will serve as a starting point for tours and will house amenities such as a gift shop a…

Webb Building Rescue?

West Coast Perspective

In a victory for downtown boosters and preservationists, one of Buffalo's long-vacant historic buildings could soon have a new owner. Sources say the Webb Building located at 92 Pearl Street is under option to a developer who will rehab the property. Present owner Ellicott Development has sat on the property since 1993 and sought to demolish the build…

I can't help but come to the conclusion that Buffalo's vast post industrial wasteland is a huge opportunity for the city. As a kid I loved studying maps, especially maps of Buffalo. I had a huge pull down map of the city that beautifully illustrated all the roads, parks, waterways, and railroads. The colors and patterns made up a true piece of art. As I studied that map I made plans in my head for how to make the city better. One of thos…
