Dear River Friends,
This week we are officially launching our new name as the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper. For nearly twenty years, the Friends of the Buffalo Niagara Rivers has played a pivotal role in improving access to our waterfront, ensuring clean water for our future, encouraging public education and ownership of the rivers and securing hundreds of millions of dollars in funding to protect our waterfront.
This summer, we officially joined the Waterkeeper Alliance as the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper. The Alliance is an association of local organizations, like the Friends, working to preserve and protect the nation's waters. The Alliance just received the Sierra Club's 2005 National William O. Douglas Award, which recognizes superlative use of the legal/judicial process to achieve environmental goals.

During the last few weeks of continuous Katrina coverage, I came across a story on the internet about a New Orleans theater company that was performing at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival during the hurricane. The company members were watching the coverage on TV between performances, concerned about their homes and their friends.
According to the article from NBC10 in Philadelphia, the company members were very concerned about their future:
"It's like your whole life, just in one storm, totally nothing, you just got to start over," said Erica Centurion. These actors' passion may be in the theater, but their paychecks come from tourists. In New Orleans they are waiters an…

Buffalo's DeepThinka Records recently announced it's plan for a large scale national promotional push of Buffalo born and bred hip hop artist Rhyson (Reason) Hall. The endeavor will begin with Rhyson's debut 12 single release, Still Raw an immensely popular track from DTR's latest compilation Rebel Radio II. The free of charge, internationally distributed CD received high acclaim, and Still Raw was the consensus choice of over 100 Radio DJs in the US and Canada.
The 12 single, expected to go to radio in late October, is just the tip of the iceberg for young Mr. Hall, a University at Buffalo student and local community activist. Groundwork has been laid for a publicity push to major magazines and print media, a CD release with label-mate Gr& Phee …

Work on the first atlas was started in 1473 and finally published in 1478. There are very few surviving examples of this atlas (One is preserved in the Karpeles Manuscript Library). A crude copy of this atlas was produced and published by some dissident workers in 1477 in order to be efirsti but the original work of 1473 qualifies the 1478 atlas as the true first atlas. Four years later in 1482 at Ulm, the first Atlas to be printed north of the Alps was issued. During the next 65 years world atlases were issued in many various forms. Some of these showed North America containing locations like Tibet and Cathay next to Cape Cod and Florida. Some showed Antarctica in accurate detail 300 years before it was discovered. These will be part of the exhibit. A listing of the great maps that will…

The Burchfield-Penney Art Center presents a selection of works by the versatile artist, Virginia Cuthbert. From her generation, Cuthbert was one of Buffalois most revered artists, known for her proficiency as a painter and her spirited camaraderie as a friend. The artist studied with artists working in a range of styles, including Charles Hawthorne, Colin Gill, George Luks, and Alexander Kostellow. Her work initially was stylistically aligned with the Ash Can School; however, she is best known for her interpretation of a style referred to as Magic Realism. Show runs until October 8, 2005.Inset: Virginia Cuthbert (1908-2001) The Birthday Party, 1956-57 Oil on canvas, 30 x 41 7/8 inches.
