This spring, save on airfare to Washington, D.C. and check out BFLO's cherry blossoms.
Many of Buffalo's streets are lined with old cherry trees that are now in their glory. Crescent Avenue in Parkside has quite a display. (Check them out during Parkside's Home Tour on Sunday 5/22.)
In another week, the sidewalks will be carpeted pink until the next flora peaks. Thanks Frederick!

Ok, so it's a laundromat. Right? Well, Lake Effect Laundromat is also a coffee shop... and a restaurant... and an art gallery (currently exhibiting works by local artists, Morgulis and Fliss)... and a lounge with free internet. Believe me, this is not your everyday laundromat. This place has a wall of twelve tv's in the lounge... right next to the crackling fireplace. There is an area that the kids can play. Need an ATM? Well, they have one. They even have auto vacuum cleaners in the parking lot so you can clean out your ride while you jeans are drying! Check it ou…

This Saturday, Fat Bob's Smokehouse is celebrating the official opening of their monster back patio. What could be better than eating some delicious bar-b-que, relaxing in the sun, and listening to some great live music? Come on, when was the last time the you had a sloppy joe sandwich? Their pulled Memphis pork is also a treat. All in all, it sounds like a sweet weekend to be in Allentown!

Don't forget that this weekend is The Helenic Festival Come down and enjoy musicians and dance troupes in authentic ethnic attire while munching on some really incredible homemade Greek recipes that have been passed along through many generations. This really is an interesting cultural event for the entire family. It takes place @ the corner of West Utica and Delaware Avenue. So get ready for some popular favorites, including souvlaki, saganaki (flaming cheese), spanakopita, pastichio, mousaka, gyra, Tzoutzoukia (homemade Greek sausage) with rice pilaf, Greek salad, and rice pudding. Oh, and you can't leave until you have tried the incredible baklava!

In the past few years I have heard a lot of people commenting on the quality of small boutique shopping in the Buffalo area. Today, a customer (unsolicited) expressed her appreciation for the shops in the area. She told me that she currently lives in Charleston, S.C., and that there are no longer any of the small privately owned shops that used to flourish in the downtown shopping districts. The Gaps and Banana Republics took over the thriving shopping areas and drove the rents up so high that the smaller privately owned businesses could no longer afford their old spaces. I am sure that this is no suprise to a lot of you, but to hear the disappointment in her voice really was quite something. I waver all the ti…

The West Side Community Collaborative (WSCC) has been working block by block West of Richmond between Porter & West Ferry for a few years now. We've significantly reduced crime & blight and have been following up with major housing investment which has resulted in impressing new home ownership rates & property values in the blocks we have focused on so far. We have developed an impressive reputation for crime abatement, but our primary goal is ultimately increased home ownership. After removing the crime from a neighborhood we follow up with beautification (painting houses, fixing sidewalks, planting trees & gardens, etc.). The…

Planting Update: The trees planted in 2002 are doing well. That year, in an effort to replace the leaf canopy over Linwood Avenue, Northern Red Oaks, Hybrid Frontier Elms, and Japanese Zelkova were planted. Ruby Red Horsechestnut trees were placed along Millard Fillmore Hospital buildings. This year, our goal is to plant about 50 trees on Rhode Island Street, and about 50 trees on the side streets of Linwood, from Delaware Avenue to Main Street. The party (Saturday, May 21 @ One Symphony Circle btwn 6-11pm) has something for everyone - an acoustic trio, local restaurant selections, and a tour of the beautiful First Presbyterian Church. -Joe O'Gorman

Very soon, Buffalo will welcome the opening of a one-of-a-kind phenomenon in this area: The Upper West Arts Center. Located at the corner of Richmond Avenue and West Ferry, the UWAC will showcase a 600 seat, acoustically pristine concert hall, a fully operational 2,300 pipe organ, a 99-seat drama theatre and a myriad of gallery and visual art spaces. For more information on this incredible project, check out Kevin Costa's feature in the new addition of Buffalo Rising Magazine.

Buffalo is a cool city. We want to retain residents who know this and make it easy for expatriates to move back. One of the things we should do is make the moving process easy -- there should be clearinghouse-type sites for finding jobs, housing, etc. Craigslist is fulfilling that function in other cities and that's why other BRJ bloggers have encouraged people to use it in our community.
In the meantime, I don't think there's a central site (other than the Buffalo News, Artvoice, etc.) for finding housing. I'd welcome corrections on this -- I like to be prepared with all of the…
