Today's AIDS Walk was a 3-mile pledge-walk-a-thon that began at HOYT Lake and continued down Elmwood Avenue through the "Forever Elmwood" business district. The Walk returned on the other side of Elmwood giving all of the local business owners a chance to make an impression on hundreds of donors and supporters. As if Elmwood was not bustling as it was! If you know anything about Buffalo, then you know that the citizens here show their support (time and time again) for the hundreds of groups and organizations that are here to help improve the quality of life of those less fortunate or in need of special…

What a perfect evening for The Dyke March. There was a great turnout for the march that travelled through-out the Elmwood Village and ended up at Bidwell Parkway for a rally to live music. Spirits were high as a large number of supporters rallied and marched to the tune of drummers, poets, and an amazing revelry from the crowd. Allentown is going to be hoppin' tonight as the marchers filter into the the local restaurants and clubs. If you missed the march, be sure to catch The Pride Parade tomorrow afternoon. Come on down and show your support for Buffalo…

Bet you didn't know you missed a great game of ultimate Frisbee aka 'disc' at Delaware Park today. Yes, ultimate in Buffalo is alive and well. Considered (by me) to be the greatest sport of all time, ultimate is a mix of rugby, football, and soccer, but it's played with a 175 gram disc or frisbee. It's a sport of endurance, strategy, and honor. Our Buffalo co-ed traveling team plays against Toronto, Rochester, Albany, and a number of other regional teams. If you are an ultimate player or are looking for a new team sport, send us an e-mail and we will get you the '05 practice schedule. At the moment, it's Saturdays @ noon at Delaware Park's rugby field. Come handle the disc with the local club team (UB ultimate players maki…

If what I am about to show you does not convince you that this city is coming alive, then walk away right now. Cuz' I never thought in a million years that I could ever be as inspired by a 'plant swap' as I was today. I know, it sounds totally lame. Unless you were there.

This Saturday is Off the Wall Restaurant's All Vinyl Spin Party. Featuring the delicious turntable stylings of: DJ Tanner, Gangsta D, and Freaky James... this should prove to be quite the vinylicious evening on Elmwood Avenue. OTW has really stepped up to the plate as far as vinyl goes in the city. If you really want to spend some time with killer beats in a hip atmosphere, this is the place. Retro lounging is their trademark. It's the place where 'almost everything is for sale.' Yup. Even the sofa you are lounging on. Just make sure that you vacate the sofa after the sale... or you might end up as a bonus fixture at someone's n…

Yet another great idea comes to fruition in Buffalo. There is a group of movie lovers that meet once a month at The Market Arcade Film and Arts Centre in downtown Buffalo to share their love of movies with one another. The club meets on the first Saturday of each month. Prior to meeting, a film is selected via e-mail votes from the members. An e-mail is sent to all members with the choices during the week prior to the meeting. Members then e-mail back with a selection that they would like to see. The film receiving the most votes is the choice for the upcoming (first showing btw. 6:30pm -8:00pm) evening. Then, another poll is taken. Where to go to discuss the movie over a drink. The discussions can take place in the …

Tucked away on a small private street between Delaware Avenue and Elmwood Avenue, just off North Street, lies a quiet English mews. Designed by the architectural firm, Edward B. Green & Son during the mid 20's, this unique group of 21 stucco and brick homes allows a visitor to envision quaint village life while, actually, the homes are situated in the heart of a large city. The inspiration for the design of Mayfair Lane was an area in London, England, named "Pomander Walk." One of the most unique features of MF can be found at the end of the Lane. It is here that the architects designed a large house often referred to as "the castle," perh…

there are so many cool eateries in the city (many of which i have yet to frequent) , i have no idea why i keep heading back to the new kid on the w. chippewa st. block again, and again, and i mean again. papaya asian kitchen and bar (open circa april) has yet to disappoint me and i truly have lost count on how many times i have eaten there in the past 3 weeks- at least 4 lunches and 4 dinners (yes i am single). tri lam, tai truong & manh le have taken the space formerly occupied by shaker lounge and transformed it into a wonderful, mode…

This 54,000 pound 1952 Mountain View Diner has become one of the most attractive and visible eateries on Main Street. Located next to The Steer Restaurant, LED is a labor of love and an integral part of University Heights' renaissance. Owner, Tucker Curtin rescued Mountain View #446 from an upscale Philadelphia suburb, and when I say rescued, I really mean it. The diner had been converted into a Chinese restaurant, and then had been abandoned, left to sit out in the elements for a long stretch of time. Well, if you take a look at the diner today, you might think that it is a replica due to the meticulous restoration that T…
