Just across the street from Globe Market is brodo (Italian for broth based soup), the inspiration of Buffalo restaurateur Don Warfe and managing partner, Elaine Greco. The duo previously worked together at Just Pasta and are also currently involved in The Garden Restaurant at Albright Knox.
brodois stylie interior is rich with vivid colors and lighting from Lightmakers on Elmwood Avenue. The patio is open and the foodOe Oh man, the food. The menu is divided into appetizers, salads, pannini, focaccia/combos, entrees, and desserts. Things you really ought to try: the brilliant soups (but maybe after the heat breaks); the panko crab cake; warm breaded goat cheese over arugla, field greens, tomat…

There are two new patios in town, that just happen to be at two great places to eat and drink in the city. Betty's on Virginia has built a wrap around patio replete with flower boxes, a beautiful garden, and patio umbrellas. Whether you are there for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, this beautiful corner enclave offers an expansive view out onto the surrounding peaceful neighborhood. Betty's is one of the Buffalo's best new eateries. The roast chicken salad sandwhich is a great lunch choice, as is the Love Sandwich for breakfast. Betty's is now serving beer and wine as well.
Just around the corner on Delaware you wi…

So far, I have endured 34 years and one week without ever living with a home air conditioner. But considering the recent heat wave, Iim thinking about buying one as a belated birthday present to myself. Iive tried different old-school techniques for cooling off:
1- Cool showers, several times a day. 2- Plenty of iced beverages, and fruit smoothies. 3- Using the kiddy pool, for the children of course (iMove over, mommais comini in.i) 4- Spending inordinate amounts of time in the chilly basement doing laundry, puttering, retrieving fictitious tools for imaginary projects. (iYeah, honey, I just gotta get that whoosymawidget to fix the you know, thing thatis brokenOei) 5- Trying to make friends with people who have pools (Just kidding…

The 10,000 Maniacs show coming up on Wednesday night at Mohawk Place got me to thinking about the band, and the many times Iive seen them play n throughout Chautauqua County, opening for the Grateful Dead at Rich Stadium (I admit to attending one Dead show in my life)... The off shoots of the band n Natalie Merchant solo a couple of times, and John & Mary in Buffalo frequently.
The music of the 10,000 Maniacs has been a major piece in the soundtrack of my life. Memories of February 28, 1986 are still with me, the first time I saw…

I can not and will not feature a photo of a band on this post. I can not because I am overwhelmed by the number of musicians that were playing today in Allentown. And I will not because the amount of talent that I saw was too awesome to describe. Even with a photo.
What really suprised me was the amount of people at the art festival that had not heard about the Music is Art Festival. How could you not know that upwards of 70 bands were playing just down the street over the course of the weekend? Let me reiterate. There are 70 (give or take a couple) smash 'em up, drag 'em down, kick ass bands p…

Today, I spent most the morning blading around the Allentown Art FestivalOe Allentown West in particular. This section of the festival is my favorite as it has a variety of artists/purveyors who are not only talented, but are dedicated Buffalonians. My first encounter was with Bob and Judy, owners of the Crystal Beach Sucker Company. The suckers are a hometown favorite and bring back many fond memories of the old amusement park. As I rolled down a bit I ran into Nate, owner of Comic City in Allentown, and his friend Annie. Not only does Nate sell the coolest comic books in the city, they have a killer t-shirt (very Captain Marvelesque) that represents the business. So I bought one. Next in line was Steve Brouse. Steveis …

Located on an unassuming block of Connecticut Street, Lupita's Mexican Caf" could easily be missed. But once you enter, there is no mistaking the sense of welcome that radiates from the red and ochre d"cor, and from the smile of proprietor Lisa Luciano. The year-old restaurant reflects the importance Lisa places on family and tradition.

Tucked into Buffalo's Central Public Library is a new downtown eatery appropriately titled Fables Caf". Taking take the metaphor a step further, its menu is organized into five clever chapters: A Thirst for Knowledge (teas and coffees), Morning Editions (breakfast), Farmer's Almanac (salads and light sandwiches), Novels (sandwiches), and Happy Endings (desserts).
