i live just off hertel around the corner from the North Park. each time i pass by i try to find the latest improvements to the building - signs, lighting, tiles, oak woodwork. I just cant wait until the marque gets a little TLC! each touch improves the neighborhood just that much.

the north park strip is a symbol of good urban practice. its got storefronts with large windows, some of the city's most diverse attractions (theatre, restaurants, furniture, books, hardware, news stores, bars, coffee), parking lots are generally hidden behind fronted commercial buildings. the nearby homes are a mix of multiple and single unit buildings.

Now if only there were a few trash cans on hertel! or should i just ask for the return of the streetcars?

There's a street in Salzburg, Austria that has the same type of signs, theirs are made of cast iron however . They originated hundreds of years ago back when some people couldn't read. A shoemaker would have a shoe as part of his sign, other shops would have their own symbols.

The original stained glass Sheas' Theatre sign is still below the marquee, covered by plywood. I believe the plan is to eventually restore it. The Northpark was one of several theatres owned by the Shea family. Trashcans are really needed on this strip. Also seems to be a ton of discarded gum and cigarette buts on the sidewalk, something I'll never understand.

This block has seen a definite improvement thanks to the new owners. This along with Empire Grill and everything else has really made Hertel improve a lot lately.

My only worry is that those ornamental bracket signs could be illegible for passing motorists. This is Buffalo and most people are totally car dependent. Most potential and long-time Hertel patrons drive everywhere and meaning driving-visible signs seem to be a necessary evil. If the signs are to small and quaint, passing drivers might be paying more attention to the jailbait strolling by on the sidewalk rather than trying to squint and read those sings, lol.

The signs definitely could be bigger but nothing too flashy/gaudy. Just a large horizontal sign with a font big enough to read cruising by at 25 mph.
