To some a broiled grapefruit for breakfast could sound like the most unappetizing meal on the planet. To others it sounds like a healthy and delicious way to start the day. Betty's on Virginia serves something called Mary's Broiled Grapefruit and I had been hearing from friends that it was very good. To me, the dish sounded interesting, but never something that I thought would 'fuel the tanks' until lunch. Recently my doc told…

Beer... Buffalo- What could possibly go wrong?
Things have been busy for The Beer Guy of late, of top of which the camera seems to have taken a turn for the dead, so: Sorry for the dearth of reviews. Of course, The Beer Guy has been drinking worthy beers, for you, but the writing part has been a bit slack. I am an idler and a scofflaw by nature, what can I say?
The new format will be to throw down one beer news and one beer review each month, so check your Sunday nights for these bimonthly posts. On the first Sunday of the month, I'll round out what I know about the B-lo beer scene (send tips to ecox@buffalorising.com) while the third Sunday will be dedicated to throwing …

DiGuilio & Co. to open on Hertel
RoBear
Opening end of June/beginning of July, Deanna DiGuilio and her mother Joanne are bringing back the DiGuilio tradition. After Victor Hugo's, Thirty One, and DiGuilio's on Allen Street, the DiGuilios are creating their new venture in the former Mulligan's Nite Club on Hertel Avenue. With dramatic mirrors behi…
When I stopped by Buffalo Hemp Outfitters I didn't expect to be bringing a meal home with me. A hat, a blanket, maybe, but dinner? So it came as some surprise to me to learn that hemp is actually considered a "super food" by many people.
Now, I don't know who Dr. Theimer is but he is right-on advocating Hanf and Natur's Hemp Pasta. Of course, being a doctor he is probably interested in the nutritional value of hemp seeds. They are, it turns out, a good source of highly digestible protein, full of fiber and essential fatty acids, and vitamins and minerals. So that's a bunch of big league plus on the health front. But for a food renegade like me it was the thought of trying something new that got me juiced up.
It has taken us three years to try Kostas, and now we've been back twice in one week!
Kostas Family Restaurant on Hertel Avenue, as the name suggests, is the perfect FAMILY restaurant. Last weekend, after a long day of yard work, we wanted to try something close to home, affordable, and kid friendly. Usually dining with the kids means compromising. But at Kostas, we found that we could each get exactly what we wanted.

An outdoor dining experience in downtown Buffalo
hippiegrrl
Great food, fabulous service and a beautiful patio await you at Hemingwayis on Pearl Street in the heart of Buffalois Theatre District. Our party of three visited this hot spot over the weekend and had a wonderful meal for a small price.
All though the food is terrific and Iill get to the meal shortly, let me first tell you about the hidden, …

And that is not such a bad thing! Go figure since locally owned eateries greatly outnumber national chains... thank goodness. We've got so many independently owned restaurant choices here that many people opt not to frequent places like Burger King and KFC on a regular basis. Buffalonians still visit a fast food restaurant an average of 4.5 times a month, and that is not terrible when you take into consideration that the average number of visits is 5.2. Birmingham tops off the list at a whopping 6.5! That's good news for Buffalo, and great news for our locally owned restaurants. For the full list of rankings, click continue.
