After reporting on the recent advancements of the Parish Commons project, I spoke to Dr. Mike Calabrese a second time regarding the green elements of the project. All total there will be upwards of twenty new dormers added to the roof, which will allow plenty of natural light in. Many of the windows will, for the first time, be able to be opened, thus allowing fresh air into the offices during the summertime. The added light will help to keep electric charges down as well. Most of the fire-damaged purlins and rafters were reused - the irreplaceable beams were milled and planed and brought back to their original state (southern yellow pine from 1902).
Another green feature that we are starting to see more of is the addition of low voltage lighting. The former church was rewired in order to accommodate the LED lighting system. Green flooring will also be introduced in the form of bamboo and cork. Most of the …

Judge William M. Skretny has asked the National Indian Gaming Commission to do what he says they must: Shut down the casino.
Part of the reason the casino's future hangs in the balance has to do with interpretation of laws that were in place at the time of Skretny's decision. In early July, Judge Skretny declared gambling at the Buffalo Creek Casino site illegal based on restricted use laws, while recognizing the land on which it sits as being sovereign. In the wake of his declaration, Skretny has asked the NIGC, a federal entity, to enforce his final decision.
The Senecas promised business as usual, and have since continued to build their new casino at the site, while operating their temporary annex full of slot machines. During a press conference yesterday with Seneca leaders, Seneca Treasurer Kevin Seneca declared, "I believe the NIGC is on our side and there will be a l…

After years of searching for a home within the City of Buffalo, Robby Takac of GooGoo Dolls fame has finally found a welcoming home for his Music is Art festival (MiA). It was not long ago that the festival was ousted from its home in Allentown. Then, in a last-ditch effort, Music is Art found a temporary location (last year) at the Hamburg Fairgrounds. There were many of us who thought that the move could have signaled the end of the inspirational event. Fortunately for Buffalo, Robby's dedication to the city proved to win out in the end.

Dog Days Of Summer

Eli George
People have a tendency to move out of the city and immediately start to miss some of the unique foods available only in Buffalo. One of those foods consistently named is Sahlen’s Hot Dogs – a true Buffalo great. The popular hot dog alongside with Dug’s Dive will be hosting the Dog Days of Summer event, where Sahlen’s hot dogs will be eaten in a picnic style hot dog eating championship contest.
One of the things making this contest unique on the competitive eating circuit is that the hot dogs will be topped with another Buffalo great – Weber’s Mustard. The rules differ from the modern competitive eating rules, stipulating that the hot dogs be eaten “picnic style” - meaning that the food item has to be eaten in its original form. This harkens to the days of…

Mohawk Place hosts a lot of shows from amazing local bands, and this Friday, they’re bringing a stellar artist named Nick Gordon to their stage. Gordon is the guitarist for the punk band London vs. New York, but has his own side projects he works on simultaneously. Back in February he released an album entitled “It’s A Chemical Drag, But It’s Not That Bad” and he’s already managed to make another.
This Friday, August 29, Gordon will be releasing his latest album that was recorded with Mark Nosowicz at Harvest Sum Studios in Orchard Park. “City Where You Lose Your Mind” features an ensemble cast of homegrown musicians that take his stripped down folk songs and splits them between orchestrated acoustic lullabies and lush, reverberating garage cuts. A mandolin accompanies Gordon in the song “Stephen Goss Is A Good Friend-a Mine” and Dylan and the Band joins Gord…

Here is a look at a couple of the University South Campus building treatments that we can expect to see in the near future. On top is the 147,792 sq.' building that will house the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The school will be relocating from the Cooke-Hochstetter Hall on North Campus.
The bottom rendering is of the South Campus Childcare facility, which will be comprised of two annex buildings. Not only will the connectivity help with the flow between the buildings, there will also be better access points. Replacement of windows, new exterior facades and roofs along with electrical systems will help to bring the facilty up to speed in the looks department too.
There has been some wonder that with the increased presence of UB facilities at the downtown Medical Campus, would these South Campus projects continue to move forward. From WestCoastPerspective: "The…

The most interesting stories in today's Buffalo News address those three topics, of course.
In case you missed it, there were reports on local television stations and in the Buffalo News that Nicole Kidman had spoken out in support of Studio Arena Theater. It seemed like an odd cause for the Australian actress to adopt and for good reason - she didn't adopt it. The story was a fake though the source and reason for the fraud is unclear.
Second, Judge Skretny has refused to order the Buffalo casino to shutdown and instead handed the issue to the National Indian Gaming Commission. From where we sit, we can see the construction on the new casino continuing as it has been for months. Piledrivers are banging, cranes are swinging, and the Seneca Nation …

Within a larger framework, the following excerpt from a statement by Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Executive Director Michael Clarke may have been the most salient point made to Congressman Brian Higgins at an August 29 field hearing.
The $3.9 billion Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 provides substantial federal resources to address the significant and ongoing national foreclosure crisis, but may miss the target for cities like Buffalo. The legislation specifically directs the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development to devise a formula for the distribution of resources to localities based on the number and percentage of foreclosures, mortgage defaults and sub-prime mortgages. LISC and others tried unsuccessfully to get housing vacancies included in this formula, and we c…

Downtown and the outer harbor- so close yet so far away. Identifying the best way to connect the two will be the job of a consultant to be hired by the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC). A new bridge is not meant to replace the Skyway- it will be a ‘local’ bridge over the Buffalo River connecting the inner and outer harbors. ECHDC, a subsidiary of the New York State Urban Development Corporation, is seeking to retain professional civil engineering, planning, and environmental consultant firms and/or teams for the federally-funded study. Proposals are due September 16.

Denim Bar

In my eyes, fashion is all about wearing what the masses can not find in every shopping mall, strip plaza or major artery of my hometown. The new buzz going around the city revolves around one of Elmwood’s newest chic boutiques. The Denim Bar has entered the Buffalo women’s market because as Justin Anderson [owner/operator] exclaims, “There is a clear lack of hot designer clothing here & the women in Buffalo deserve exposure to some of the countries hottest lines.”
I stopped in recently and love the simplicity and energy of the space- bright, clean and full of killer fashion. The shop feels like the Diesel store in NYC. Denim Bar carries Jeans for everybody ranging from $40 to $300- including: Antiq, Raven, Plastic, Plush Premium, Travetini & Flying Monkey. They currently carry 9 of the hottest, most unique denim in the industry and plan on adding 6 more names by Oc…
