Buffalo Booksellers
If you are a bibliophile like me you probably already know these Buffalo used and rare booksellers who, in this age of internet price warfare, dare to keep a brick and mortar shop alive. I've spent a lot of time in their shops, as there are few things in life I enjoy more than browsing through the stacks until something jumps out at me. Sometimes it is a cherished book I had forgotten (just a few weeks ago stumbled across a copy of "The Secret: A Treasure Hunt" that I hadn't thought about for 20 years). Other times, and far more frequently, it is a book I didn't know I needed or wanted. Last week, at Second Reader, I found a book entitled "Kooks", a collection of essays and documents by and about people with, ahem, odd view of life...the pamphlet about men giving birth was particularly amusing.
Over the summer I plan to do a series of…

Babik "Birthday" Celebration
For the past year, local Gypsy Jazz Band BABIK has been performing every Wednesday night at Allen Street Hardware Cafe. (A little too late for most folks on a "school night".) But to celebrate their One Year Anniversary of playing at Hardware, Babik will perform a special evening show there on Sunday, April 30 from 7-11pm. This is a great opportunity for those early-to-bed folks who've been missing out to experience some Gypsy Jazz, and still get home at a reasonable hour on a school night.
Sunday, April 30th, Anniversary Party from 7-11pm at Allen Street Hardware Cafe, 245 Allen Street @ College, for what is shaping up to be a very special event. The …

Mr. Wiggles

Bay Area mashup artist DJ Earworm here in "I Like The Way Jenny Scrubs" mashes up "Jenny from the Block" by Jennifer Lopez, "No Scrubs" by TLC, "Get Ur Freak On" by Missy Elliot, and "I Like the Way You Move" by the Bodyrockers.
Pretty damn cool.

On July 20th of last year I posted a story (actually a request) about a local motor scooter enthusiast who was looking for a space to open a shop in the city. The quest has been a long one in which the perfect showroom space was unfortunately …

I was originally going to post something on what an overall nice evening it was to take a walk with some friends at Delaware Park. I was going to throw some photos up about speed walkers and basketball players and golfers. I was going to talk about a young kid flying a kite and rollerbladers zipping around the …

Quilter's Palette Shop Hop Stop
Every other spring, the Amherst Museum Quilters Guild presents a Quilt Show & Auction - the largest in Western New York. For the first time, they are including Buffalo's own Elmwood Village Fabrics as stop on their Shop Hop to quilting stores in the surrounding area. This is good news since it will draw lots of quilters into the city to do the two other things that quilters love: Shop and Eat. During April 17 - 27, 2006, at participating Hop Shops including EVF, quilters can pick up an entry blank for a chance to win $100 gift certificate to the shop of their choice. (Click here for details.) Elmwood Village Fabrics will be offering some …

The Hybrid Granturismo
George Johnson
Earlier this week, there was talk of how hybrid cars with their increased fuel efficiency might impact city development. Hereis a bit of hybrid technology that will definitely impact the cityis style.
They're called Oral Fixation. They have a sleek, stylish packaging. And last night they were featured on Food Network's "Unwrapped". Sounds like the subject for a trend post to me.
Now for the letdown: they're mints. But man-o-man what mints. As a man whose path to a smoke-free existence was assisted by packing my piehole full of these little fresheners every chance I could get, I feel myself a sort of mint authority. And let me tell you, this is a mint that makes you want to skip dinner and go straight to the tin. Who cares if the mouth isn't rancid right now, it might be later, so maybe a few PRE-EMPTIVE mints. See where I'm going with this?
