Buffalo and development junkie currently exiled in California.

“A palette paints Buffalo black and white…and every color in between.” By Marcus Scott       Ribbons of stark chromaticity lick the walls of a small studio exhibit in the belly of the Allentown district of Buffalo.  A draping phosphorescent glow hits the walls and floor. Inside the four crème blushed walls are two men in glasses–one who is statuesque, with salt and pepper hair and a playful charm that borders on caricature and the other, who is stocky with champagne colored hair and a epigrammatic and monosyllabic dialogue that makes him all the more intriguing. Their names are Glenn…

A friend of mine sent me this link to MSNBC’s Today show featuring a Buffalo property for sale for $219,000. The House Hunting report showcased a classic Colonial and talked about the outstanding community and the city’s excellent proximity to Niagara Falls (I wish they had also mentioned Toronto). The downfall of the city during the ’70’s and ’80’s was mentioned, but at the same time the city’s ‘recent’ economic upswing was also touched upon. Real estate expert Barbara Corcoran and MSNBC’s Al Roker did justice to Buffalo – these types of quick promos are great… especially when some people…

I believe that The Cooperage stabilization project and ultimate loft conversion plan is one of the most exciting advances taking place in the city. The order of magnitude regarding this Civil War-era complex has yet to sink in to the collective Buffalo psyche. Developer Ben Obletz once proved that people would take a chance living in an area of the city that was considered a final frontier. He converted the Elk Terminal building into a series of lofts that continue to thrive to this day. Now Clint Brown has been handed the reins and his dream of rescuing and rehabbing…

By Mark HennesseyHigh Speed Rail is an important part of Upstate New York and Buffalo’s future – a fact many made clear in a December letter to President Obama.  As shares of the Federal Stimulus Package become available, it is important that New York get out front on this issue – and the stakes could not be greater.  As people working to advance upstate’s interests – we have all seen the times when Upstate has gotten left behind. In a lot of these cases our interests are forgotten because we did not do our homework and we did not reach…

Brown traveled to the State Capitol in Albany on Tuesday to meet with Governor Paterson, legislative leaders and staff regarding ongoing state budget negotiations and the federal stimulus package. The Mayor presented an outline of his Administration’s requests in the state’s 2009-10 budget. (See below.) “I wanted to sit down and speak face-to-face with Governor Paterson, Assembly Speaker Silver, Senate Majority Smith, state legislators and staff regarding the City of Buffalo’s legislative priorities and budget requests,” said Mayor Brown. “I also took the opportunity to speak to the Governor and the legislative leaders about the federal stimulus…

By Sean BrodfuehrerWhile walking home from the bus stop today, I was saddened to see the cloister of St Margret’s Church was being torn down. St. Margret’s is located on Hertel Avenue between Saranac and North Park Avenues in the North Park neighborhood. The element in question stood on the southern edge of the property and runs east-west along Saranac Avenue. For some time now the exterior wall has been slowly heaving away from the interior courtyard and connecting structures. I was hoping this day would not come, and that repairs might be coming soon.  Alas, it appears this is the…

Those of you who like to see signs of construction progress in the form of structural steel, a drive from Canisius High School to D’Youville College should whet your appetite. It looks as if the buildings are neck in neck – top photo shows progress on the Canisius Math and Science Wing, while the bottom photo features the D’Youville’s academic building.Comment on Canisius project left by AFdf in September: “I’m a Junior at CHS and although the additions probably won’t be completed until a year after I graduate I’m glad that Canisius is upgrading the campus. Space has been gradually…

Grant Street is getting a gelato joint. And guess where it’s going? Almost directly across the street from Sweet_ness 7 Café. Grant Street’s cornerstone café certainly did not waste time attracting another West Side believer. This time it’s David Simpson who is planting a commercial flag near the corner of Grant and Lafayette. “The new energy and development attracted me to the street,” Dave told me. “Combined with the history of the neighborhood, we knew that we wanted to be a part of the street’s growth. Guercio’s Market is a great draw as well – the business has been around…
