University at Buffalo’s South Campus will not become a ghost town when medical-related programs move downtown to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. The UB 2020 plan envisions a “new purpose and identity” for the South Campus as a center of professional education. Over time, the School of Law, Graduate School of Education, and School of Social Work will move from North Campus to join Architecture and Planning to form a new graduate professional education campus. The Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health and Health Professions are expected to move downtown in the nearer term. Dental Medicine and School of Pharmacy…

By Maria SabastianIn 2004 or so, I played with my then-band down in Monticello, NY, just outside of the original Woodstock site in Sullivan County. I was unaware until then that the site of the concert was not in the same place as the town of Woodstock, which has come to be one of my favorite road trips since my first visit that summer. Since we were close to the site of the show, we decided to check it out for ourselves. When we arrived, we found a classic hippie sitting on a rock (see photo) who asked, “Is it over?”…

The Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society is truly a gem. Built in 1901, the entire Doric style building is faced with Vermont style marble. During the Pan American Exposition, which introduced the world to large-scale electric lighting, the structure acted as the New York Pavilion– one of the only buildings not constructed of temporary staff (plaster and straw). Architect George Cary had been the first Buffalonian to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, “School of Fine Arts,” whose origin dates back to 1648. The beautiful south portico, which overlooks the North Bay of Delaware Park Lake, is a…

It has been a quiet year since Savarino Companies stepped forward with reuse plans for the White’s Livery property at 428 Jersey Street. The circa-1889 structure was nearly completely leveled by the City after its historic walls started crumbling. Neighborhood residents successfully lobbied the City to save the structure’s front and rear facades and distinctive tower. Savarino’s plans for an apartment project to be constructed within the building’s remaining walls are still very much alive. The project scope has remained essentially the same- the new building will incorporate the remaining front and rear facades and tower. It will be three…

Hallwalls’ primary objective in organizing its first benefit auction in 17 years–which, after a year and a half of planning, finally takes place this Thursday evening, 6 PM, in Asbury Hall at Babeville–is to raise much-needed funds in this most challenging of years for all nonprofit arts groups.
