As much as some neighborhoods and residents recycle within the City of Buffalo, sadly, there are just as many, if not more, who don’t. Currently the City of Buffalo only recycles about 6.5% of solid waste, a rate well below the national average of 27%. I encourage every one to start recycling if you haven’t already. If you already recycle then I encourage you to increase how much goes into your recycling bin each week. It is never too late to start a good recycling plan for your household. You can prepare your weekly recycling products by placing paper products…

As the year 2007 nears an end, our Buffalo region continues to search for a new beginning. And more than ever, time is of the essence. On average, every hour and forty minutes, one person moves out of Western New York. We’ve lost more 25 to 34-year-old residents than any other community in America. And as everyone knows, they’re leaving not out of desire, but out of necessity. Over the past two decades, some 23,000 private sector jobs have vanished. Housing stock values and per capita income levels are down. We’ve closed public libraries, beaches, and pools, in the process…

The BPO released a cd of works by Ottorino Respighi this month, featuring Church Windows, a piece that was composed for piano originally. Jeff Simon of the Buffalo News describes this piece, “Based on Gregorian themes introduced to him by his wife, it balances blazing orchestration with religious fervor in a way that superbly challenges any orchestra.” The orchestra recorded for this cd at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, and photographs of the building’s stained glass windows are the cover art. The BPO is making the recording and releasing of cds a tradition, with an ongoing contract with Naxos International, the world’s…

Remember Cliff Clavin, the postal worker with endless bits of useless information, from Cheers? Holiday Art Exhibits This evening, Buffalo Arts Studio opens the first of a string of holiday exhibits featuring the work of regional artists, with the “Annual Artist Exhibit and Sale 07.” The work available in this area is not only exceptional in quality, but also incredibly reasonably priced. I have had the opportunity to check out a couple of the units in Artspace Buffalo in the past month. The refurbishing of the five-story, Buffalo Electric Vehicle Company building into artist lofts is largely complete. The 36 units in the original building and the 24 units in the new builds behind the original structure are nearly fully inhabited. Hamilton Houston Lownie Architects, Savarino Construction, Artspace, Inc., the City of Buffalo, and everyone else involved with this project should be proud of the valuable addition to Main Street. These live-work units were designed with artists in mind, and most of…

Xtreme Wheels wasn’t originally planned to be a concert venue, but that hasn’t stopped it from becoming a premiere location to watch local bands perform. The original focus was to create an extreme sports complex, but that focus expanded to provide a place for Buffalo’s own artists to call home. While the skate park/concert hall hybrid has played host to many burgeoning national acts like Daphne Loves Derby and Quietdrive, its stage is filled primarily with local Buffalo talent. The Guns of Camden, a local Hardcore band take the stage at Xtreme Wheels on a fairly regular basis. Mike Hansen…

To the surprise of few, residents of the neighboring Park Lane Condominium have sued over City approvals to construct a 23-story condo tower on Gates Circle. Uniland received permission to construct the luxury building in early October. The News has the maddening details after the jump. Neighbors Sue to Block Condo Tower Richard J. Lippes, the Buffalo attorney who represents the condominium owners, said that, for “a number of strong reasons,” an environmental study should have been conducted before action on the plan for the site, next-door to the Park Lane Condominiums. The 40-page suit reiterates several issues raised by…
