THE BASICS: This classic Shaw comedy was last staged at the Festival in 2003. It’s back, with new trimmings, at the Royal George Theatre, where it plays in repertory through October 27th. The production was directed by Eda Holmes, and designed by Judith Bowden. It runs just shy of two-and-a-half hours, with its single intermission.THUMBNAIL SKETCH: Here is Shaw on familiar ground, exploring the curious mating habits of his countrymen, and the ever-perplexing parent-child bond. The action (what there is of it) takes place at the country house of John Tarleton, the Underwear King, supposedly in the spring of 1962…

It’s been a long time since I’ve provided an update on cycling in Buffalo – maybe it’s because this year we made a lot of headway as far as the recreation is concerned (see Year in Review below). At the same time we need to make steady improvements in the new year so that we can alleviate some of the safety hazards that go hand-in-hand with biking in Buffalo. Having plenty of places to lock a bike up is one thing – to provide bike lanes that connect the four corners of our city is another. With that in mind,…

This is a picture of what may be one of the best marketing strategies that I have ever seen to market an empty commercial space. Owners of the Sidway Building have tricked out the first floor of the building, formerly The Blue Mirage, with really eye-catching holiday lighting and decorations. For a second I actually thought that there was a new business in the space. Then I saw the very visible signs that read, “Restaurant/Bar Space For Lease – 4800 sq.’ built out – Call 716-852-4321 – $4800 a month NNN – Leasing@SidwayBuffalo.com.”If only more building owners would consider adding…

Here’s the first glimpse of an AM&A’s Warehouse Lofts demo. Per usual, Rocco Termini’s Signature Development wasted no time in introducing a ‘Built by Rocco – Furnished by room*’ showroom. Even as the building’s framing is still a work-in process, an example of what future downtown dwellers can expect is in the preliminary leasing stages (April ’10 delivery date on the units).Speaking of ‘Signature’, the focal point, as always, is the flooring – completely unique to every Signature project. This time it’s the original wood warehouse flooring that provides all the character that anyone could ever hope for. As I toured…

The National Hockey League’s league-leading goaltender, Buffalo Sabres’ Ryan Miller, is not only the top dog between the pipes this hockey season, but is one of the hottest names in Buffalo this holiday season. Over the past few years Miller has quietly become a “brand” by lending his star power to numerous charitable fundraisers and events, including his annual A-List party, “Catwalk for Charity.” This holiday season, Miller lends his support to three distinct products that will make great holiday gifts, with proceeds going toward enhancing the lives of those facing cancer. The charity closest to Miller’s heart is his self-created…

I can’t tell you how impressed I am with the Buffalo Indie Market – so impressed, that I feel that the market should be turned up a notch. For all of the times that people comment that any attempt to start a permanent market of this sort would end up being a crumby flea market… the Indie Market is the perfect model to follow. Held periodically throughout the year, Mary Stephen McGinnis’ vision for the traveling market is brilliant. The homespun products are varied in style and price. The quality of the goods is monitored. The attendance appears to grow…

Keeping up with Fred Daniel and his friends is no easy task. Fred recently opened Freddie J’s Barbecue on the city’s West Side. The restaurant is now keeping longer hours after the buzz from Extreme Makeover generated a ton of interest in his food. Every week I receive a phone call from Fred outlining his plan to dot the urban landscape with uniquely-Fred culinary enterprises.Fred’s latest endeavor puts him at the helm of his buddy Eric Humphrey’s sports bar and grill. “The Good Life is all about putting Bailey on the collective map for all of the right reasons,” Fred…

I’m pleased to present the winning design of the Buffalo Powder Keg Festival. The logo was designed by Dan Zeis, and incorporated everything that we were hoping to see into the design. Without prompting, Dan took the emphasis off the snow (very topical), and through bold color and tasteful graphics came up with a fun, explosive design. Here’s some info on our winner:Dan Zeis is currently Senior Art Director with Penton Media. He has also worked for McGraw-Hill Publishing and Primedia – all in their magazine divisions. He is a graduate of Bryant and Stratton (when they were on North…
