Globe Factory No. 23, a solo recording project based in Austin, Texas (launched by a Buffalo boy by the name of Rob Seidenberg), has produced a series of songs inspired by drinks at Vera Pizzeria in Buffalo. It’s a mashup of epic proportions, literally derived from elixirs being prepared at a local establishment that has helped to put Buffalo on the map for its craft cocktails. Now a set of tracks is helping to broadcast the specialty cocktails in the form of song. It’s certainly an interesting project that, after taking an initial listen on SoundCloud (see here), is worthy of…

The NY Times has a great piece on the plight of the Buffalo Jills and their past, present and future struggles with The Bills. It’s a bit depressing to think that with all of the money being thrown around these days when it comes to professional sports teams in Buffalo, that a quick and painless plan can’t be laid out that would take care of these cheerleaders. At this point it’s probably as much about saving face, and not admitting to any wrongdoing, as it is figuring out what the plan is moving forward. When I was younger I was…

A new gallery has sprung up at 667 Main Street in Downtown Buffalo. I found out about the gallery after learning than an incredibly talented artist by the name of Jeffrey Vincent had returned to Buffalo after being away for a few years. When Jeffrey left this city I considered it to be a big blow for our neck of the woods. When I heard that he had recently returned, and was working on opening a small gallery, I was thrilled. “BOX Gallery is a space the Jon Piret (the manager of Hostel Buffalo/Niagara) and I put together a few months…

For years I’ve been reading about these incredible golf balls that have been helping to revolutionize the sport of golf. Not being a golfer myself, it’s interesting that I have heard so much about these golf balls. Of course there’s only one reason that these golf balls keep popping up on my radar. They are made in Buffalo. Not only are they made in Buffalo, they are also considered “the world’s first and only patented hollow-metal core golf ball,” and that’s something that this city should be proud of (see the story). If you’ve got a golfer in your family, or…

As part of its winter programming, Canalside is soliciting a number of pop-up vendors to showcase their goods once the skating on the canals is operational. I was wondering what the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC) was going to do to add interest to the site, other than promoting the newly opened Tim Hortons and 716 Food and Sport. In order to create a holiday atmosphere there needs to be broadcasted music, a holiday tree, warming huts, heating elements, etc. Basically, when visitors exit the Metro Rail there should be plenty for them to see and do. To add…

Calling all families who are looking to get into the spirit of Christmas, this weekend, for three consecutive days, the Elmwood Village will come alive with the sounds of “Unsilent Night”. It’s an event that was dreamed up to bring holiday cheer to the city of good neighbors. During the event, visitors will be entertained by a participatory performance of “Unsilent Night” – composer Phil Kline’s holiday sound sculpture (Friday evening). But that’s just the start. Throughout the weekend, a number of Elmwood businesses are rolling out Santa’s red carpet, with hot and cold beverages, yummy treats, holiday decorations, visits from…

When it comes to The Foundry, there are a couple things that you should know. First of all, whatever it is that they are introducing to their collective, you can bet that it’s going to be different. At the same time, you can rest assured that it’s going to be good. Take. for example, the introduction of Nana Amma’s Vegan Ghana Kitchen. On Saturday, December 13, 2014, the community is invited to stop by The Foundry to taste a number of vegan Ghanaian dishes prepared by with a lot of love by a vegan chef who is relatively new to…

To say that I’m out of touch when it comes to the world of sneakers is an understatement. The last time that I actually purchased a pair of sneakers was a couple of years ago, and to tell you the truth they were nothing special. Actually I didn’t even know how “special” a pair of sneaks could be until today. That’s because I happened to walk into a new store on Elmwood Avenue called Sole High, which specializes in sneaker culture. When it comes to the art of sneakers, Sole High might as well be the Albright-Knox. The shop carries…

For most of us, East/West Ferry is a “bridge” between the West Side and the East Side that one simply drives on to get from one side of the city to the other. In urbanist Mark Goldman’s eyes, the street is something much more than a thoroughfare. In a show of community strength, Friends of the Buffalo Story, Mayor Brown and Goldman have embarked upon a lofty initiative that will one day see the street transformed into the The Ferry Street Corridor (FSC). If you ask Goldman, he will tell you that the Buffalo Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (BAVPA), located just off…

In the world of small business, sometimes things don’t always go according to plan. In the case of Chow Chocolat, the boutique chocolatier has hopped around Buffalo in search of the perfect fit. It started with a shop on Main Street (Downtown), and then Elmwood, then into the Horsefeathers building, and now its only a matter of days before owner Scott Wisz opens the doors to his latest creation on Hertel Avenue. Scott will be operating out of a former law office. It’s always good to see more retail moving onto the street, in place of service oriented businesses that…
