Flying Bison Brewery has brewed a new beer dedicated to the memory of former Buffalo Mayor, Jimmy “Six Pack” Griffin. The aptly named beer reflects the Mayor’s sense of humor, especially when it came to the Blizzard of ’85. During the blizzard, Griffin suggested to people that they grab a six pack of beer and stay home, which many people took to heart. In just a few hours, the beer called “HIZZONER” will be tapped at Flying Bison. The ceremony will coincide with the Run Jimmy Run Charity 5k. Griffin was a fan of beer, small business, and South Buffalo – all of…

On December 3, artist Yegor Mikushkin will be making a special trip to Buffalo, to present his 3 dimensional works of art at Sugar City. The international acclaimed artist will al so painting “live” at the event, upon which time guests will be able to view the work-in-progress while wearing 3D glasses. After viewing the flowing, colorful works by the artists, I reached out to him to ask him about his inspirations, the process, and what it’s like to paint works in 3D. “It’s like green flavored feelings,” he told me. “Loud tastes that remind you of tomorrow’s memories but without…

It’s hard to imagine that it’s the one year anniversary of “Snowvember”. I’m sure that we can all recall the crazy snow storm that whipped its way into Buffalo, causing chaos to many in the area – primarily South Buffalo and the Southtowns. Looking outside today, at a brilliantly blue sky, with an anticipated temperature high of 60 degrees, Snowvember seems as if it was a dream. But it was not a dream. It was a nightmare to many, including Trace George, who owns VSP Graphic Group – the official graphic company of the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, Harbor Center and the…

I have always thought that it would be awesome if Buffalo had a real glass blowing studio in its midst. We have pottery studios, and metal studios, but not much when it comes to the art of glass blowing. Now an effort is underway to not only establish a popular glass blowing studio, the endeavor would also be coupled with a craft cocktail bar/restaurant. Essentially, people would be able to see the glass blowing operation underway, and then have cocktails and eat dinner. Plus, the atmosphere would be surrounded by blown glass objects that people could purchase, drink out of, or…

Have you been in search for some comedic relief, in the form of a podcast? Then we have the perfect solution for you. Zach Pape, a senior media studies student at University at Buffalo is producing a series of podcasts called Overnighters. Zach and cohorts have created an audio serial that fictitiously plays out at a local supermarket. The employees (lead characters) of the market work the overnight shift and are pretty much left to their own devices. The scenarios that ensue are humorous to say the least. “I have lived in Buffalo my whole life,” said Zach, via an email correspondence.…

Finally, a home furnishings and gift shop has opened on Main Street in Downtown Buffalo that resembles the type of shopping experience that people once took for granted. There are lush and lavish oversized pillows, eccentric gadgets and books, timeless retro-modern chairs, Buffalo-themed gifts (see street grid pillow), fashionable statements, lighting elements,…

Tipico Coffee opened up this weekend, signaling the creation of a wonderful neighborhood resource that works on so many levels. First, there are very few cafés of this nature, nestled right into a neighborhood setting. Most coffee shops are found on main drags, making the advent of Tipico (see story) something special. Second, the café was built in reverse. Instead of being built with an operator in mind (which is what traditionally happens), Tipico was built to bring a modernist vision to Buffalo. The interior of Tipico is sleek and streamlined, yet warmed by radiant floor heat, along with an ancient…
