While most of Buffalo was celebrating at the St. Patrick’s Day parade yesterday, a boatload of blues music lovers gathered at Laurel & Hardy’s Café at 1388 Broadway on the city’s East Side. The occasion was a fundraiser for Jimmy Camarda, owner of Market Bar, which suffered serious damage from a fire this past winter. At first, Jimmy thought that the fire was the end of the line for his dream of running a blues bar. But then friends/patrons/blues lovers stepped up and decided to host a benefit to breathe new life into the vanquished Market Bar. Jimmy told me that the fundraiser…

Two of Buffalo’s design rock stars have come together, to produce a visually surreal work of art for all to see at Squeaky Wheel headquarters on Main Street in Downtown. The project is located in Squeaky Wheel’s display window fronting 617 Main Street. I’m a big fan of viewing art installations at places that intermingle with daily life. These are the places that allow you a moment to reflect, on your own time, when you might least expect to be thrown into a contemplative state. It was after dining at EXPO Market that I came across this fascinating video/art installation.…

An East Side incubator has carved out more space for the start-up community. The Foundry is growing, and a number of young Buffalo businesses are growing with it. Due to the overwhelming success of its ability to house and provide services for local start-ups, The Foundry is expanding its offerings – twelve new incubator spaces are now available on the first floor, and an expansion on the second floor, which creates a whopping total of 48 spaces combined. That’s a sizable number of start-ups to be housed under any one roof. Thanks to a partnership initiative with The Service Collaborative of…

Moments ago I called Time Warner Cable to tell them that I was considering cutting my cable unless they could cut me a sweet deal. I currently get cable and internet services through the company. I use the internet every day, but seldom do I watch TV. According to my first cable phone representative, I’ve been paying around $220 a month even though I believe that he jacked up the number a bit so that he could offer me a lower rate (close to what I’m actually paying). It was then that I decided that I was throwing my money…

Each spring, Buffalo cyclists break out their tweed clothes and hit the streets to celebrate the arrival of the warmer months ahead. Some riders don tweed from head to toe, while others simply wear one tweed article of clothing. The point is, that tweed is ‘in’ (it’s never ‘out’), and this is the perfect time of year to flaunt your woolens. Been outside lately? Spring is in the air. Put some of that fresh air in your tires and lube your drivetrains. You know what I’m saying: It’s The Buffalo Lazy Randonneur Club Tweed Run. On Sunday, March 20, cyclists…

On a recent vacation, my family ventured to a nature preserve where we got a chance to observe the indigenous plant and wildlife. At the far end of our hike, we came upon a three tier tower – it was essentially at the halfway point of our journey. Upon climbing the tower, my wife exclaimed “Tifft should have this feature!” As I looked around, from the top of the tower, everything came into focus. The top of the tower offered a vantage point onto the island that put everything into perspective. From above, we could see the ocean, the plant…

The community is invited to attend the opening of a new gallery called Paper Moon at 497 Franklin Street. Owner-operators Laura Borneman and Michael Pijanowski are committed to showcasing local and national artists in the best possible light. At the same time the owners will open their doors as an interactive art studio for children and adults. Often times, gallery spaces are underutilized when there is not a show underway, or during hours when the space is not open to the viewing public. It’s at these times that Paper Moon will transition into a place that is full of life, with people attending classes and…
