Deep South Taco has partnered up with 42 North Brewing Company to produce a nice drinkable Mexican lager that will be available at the restaurant and the brewery. The first batch was tapped this evening by a couple of luchador wrestlers. On hand at the ceremony was 42 North Director of Recipe Development Alex Sowyrda and Chief Brewing Officer Clay Keel, as well as Deep South Taco owner Richard Hamilton. The LuchaBrew is an amber lager brewed like the early Vienna-style beers first brewed by German expats in Mexico many years ago.  The relationship came to pass when the 42…

One of Delaware Park’s most marvelous features was once the Quarry Gardens that once graced an area near the Parkside Lodge. Unfortunately, the gardens disappeared when they were filled in with debris from the Scajaquada Expressway project. It’s too bad that another one of Olmsted’s visions for the park system was buried along with the infill. But that was the pervasive sentiment in Buffalo back then. Progress for the sake of progress, with no regard to the city’s historic and cultural jewels. Now, there is a band of preservationists and park lovers who want to see some sort of rectification…

Our quest for great taverns and pubs in Buffalo continues. This time, we’re taking you to Kaisertown, a place that you might not be familiar with unless you live there. If you do live there, then you probably reside in a quaint cottage home, on a side street off Clinton Street. If you’re visiting for a few hours, then you will notice all of the tight-knit communities, bounding a commercial thoroughfare that is lined with old churches, neighborhood bars and taverns, and an occasional bowling alley or bake shop. It might be hard to tell what’s open on Clinton Street…

A fish sandwich is usually the last thing that comes to mind when I’m thinking about heading out to get something to eat. But just the other day my wife said that she wanted to try to fish sandwich as Bailey Seafood, so I agree. I had not been to Bailey Seafood in a while, and wanted to check the place out to see how they were faring. First off, Bailey Seafood continues to expand their offerings. Every time I go in there, there’s always something new. Whether it’s a snazzy robotic drink dispenser or a menu item that sounds…

Now that it looks as if everyone is throwing their hats into the ring when it comes to helping to determine where the future Amtrak station should be located, Mayor Brown has come up with his own game plan. The Mayor, appointed to Chair the process by Cuomo, has retained the services and the insight of Robert Shibley to facilitate the planning process moving forward. Shibley will now orchestrate the discussion, which is currently running rampant in various directions. This is unfolding as Governor Cuomo has helped to loosen $1 million in funding for six months of research that will pinpoint the…

Riverside is getting some ecological love these days. Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper has partnered with the Farmer’s Garden in Riverside to plant trees and shrubs in neighborhoods that could use a little greening. The partnership is part of Riverkeeper’s “Native Niagara” program that has roots going back as far as 2012. Over the years, invasive plant species have run roughshod over our neighborhoods. Many of these plants are introduced voluntarily because of their appearance, while others take hold through myriad means. A stock of plants with a truly native genotype is being grown to be used in future habitat restoration efforts within…

Ellicott Development has succeeded in demolishing The Bachelor apartment building. Wrecking crews did their thing on Saturday. For those who are concerned about preservation efforts in Buffalo, this is a heavy blow. For those who want to see more shiny modern buildings being built, this will make them happy. In the end, The Bachelor never really stood a chance. Seeing a development like this (see below) waiting in the wings, it was only a matter of time. Mega dollars for new buildings will usually win, especially when you’re talking about a relatively obscure building such as The Bachelor.  It won’t…

When throwing events in Buffalo, you never know who is going to walk through your front door… or in this case, what. Just yesterday, a special surprise was dropped into my lap when Melissa Campbell (Filigrees and Ultra Hoops) mentioned that she was bringing a special guest to The Witches Ball. The guest, it turns out, is a giant toad that seconds as an oxygen bar. Yup, you heard me right. The idea for The Great Töad first came about during an Art Build session at Töad Meädow (see here). “Actually, the inspiration really came when Shakti Yoga (on Grant Street) was doing…
