The term “CSA” has been bandied about on Buffalo Rising.com, often leading to the discovery that many of our readers don’t know what CSA stands for, or what Community Supported Agriculture (the term for which CSA is an acronym) really means. A Community Supported Agriculture farm is a cooperative business structure in which individuals purchase shares (literally a share of the harvest) per season. This model provides the farm with the cash it needs up front in order to move ahead with the planting and care of its crops and livestock. In many cases it also assists the farmer in…

Glorious pierogi. This delicious concoction of filling tucked into a tender dough pocket and pan fried to perfection is an essential component of ethnic Buffalo. Our city being settled by waves of immigrants has allowed for many diverse cultures and their cuisines to take root in the Queen City. Eastern European immigrants flooded the East Side of Buffalo in the late 1800’s, bringing with them their traditions, religion, and food. By now, my admiration, adoration, and affinity for pierogi is probably clear. Indeed, BR in general appreciates pierogi as evidenced in Christa’s Slavic Bazzar post, Emilie Reister’s Easter piece, and…

Editor’s Note: The following story appears in the September issue of Buffalo Rising Magazine, and should list Courtney Bajdas as the author. There are so many characteristics that differentiate cultures; language, religious beliefs, and cultural traditions are just a few. Still, as individuals we are more alike than different, and the commonalities that transcend cultural lines include things like art, music, and well, dough pockets. Many individual cultures have come to realize the convenience and versatility of a meal contained in a hand-held, filled dough pocket. The larger versions, like Asian samosas or Latino empanadas, can encapsulate an entire meal.…

St. Joseph’s Parish on Main Street is gearing up for their biennial Taste of St. Joseph. There will be various ethnic and cultural dance performances, music, displays, and crafts. The diversity is extensive, including an Irish dance troupe, Caribbean steel band and Ukrainian egg decorating. The highlight, for me at least, will be the broad range of cuisines available. There will be samples from Croatia, Peru, Pakistan, Egypt, Ireland, the Philippines, China, Puerto Rico, Germany, Greece, Austria, England, Panama, Morocco, South Korea, Poland, Colombia, Italy, and Mexico. And did I mention that it’s free? That’s right, no cost to you.…

This weekend marked the 28th annual Dozynki celebration at Corpus Christi Church. Dozynki is the Polish fall harvest festival, similar to America’s Thanksgiving. Corpus Christi celebrated for two days with live music, delicious Polish food, raffles, a farmers’ market, crafts, Polish beer and more. We arrived Sunday afternoon just as 11:30 Mass was ending. Entering the behemoth Victorian/Romanesque style church left me breathless, immediately reminding me of the colossal churches of old Europe with intricate detail, enormous scope, and awe inspiring preservation. Inside the magnificent church, the young and amiable Father Anzelm Chalupka approached to personally welcome us. Outside the…

A normally desolate strip of Broadway was brought to life Saturday by the deep beats and smooth melodies of some of Buffalo’s best musicians. The crowd at the second annual Queen City Jazz Fest grew steadily throughout the day, as the sun receded behind City Hall, casting long, cool shadows upon the hot pavement. By nightfall, when the last notes were being tickled on the ivories, the street was fully alive with jazz enthusiasts and supporters of the fledgling Michigan Avenue Corridor. The impressive, and diverse, turnout speaks to the vast and growing interest in the Colored Musicians Club, host…
