Who could have guessed that pickleball would have become such a huge hit at Seneca One Tower? After we initially made the announcement that pickleball had arrived at The Tower, pickleball fever has been mounting ever since.
Now, the next evolution of pickleball at The Tower is The Corporate Slam, where local “corporate” entities go head-to-head to compete for top prizes. The Slam takes place on Thursday, March 28, from 4pm to 6pm and includes complimentary stretches by StretchLab. Come root on your favorite corporate team, or hoot and howl for the members of the Buffalo Fire Department, who have been honing their pickleball skills in Larkinville for years.
“The Corporate Slam is based on the Gus Macker tournament that was once so popular in Downtown Buffalo,” said Greg Moyer of Douglas Development. “There are a lot of events downtown, but not so many fun and exciting sporting events. These types of fun-loving tournaments are competitive and bring people together to cheer on their favorite teams. The event is family-friendly and free and open to the public.”
Since pickleball initially kicked off at Seneca One Tower, over 700 people have reserved courts. With that in mind, Moyer and friends are looking for more ways to capitalize on the indoor pickleball craze. I asked him if he might consider installing some outdoor courts, and he told me that the intention is to corner the downtown market on indoor pickleball.
“There might be a little conflict during the wedding season,” said Moyer. “But in general the indoor aspect of the courts lends itself to year round play, even in the summer when there are bound to be some windy days down here. Plus, the room is sunny and naturally lit, which makes for a beautiful setting on a warm sunny day. We’re currently looking at ways to bring additional pickleball opportunities to the building.”
Moyer also made mention that Tellers Lobby Bar is officially open. The bar is situated in the exact spot that tellers once occupied when it was an operational Marine Midland Bank building.
“The bar is open to the public,” Moyer stated. “There’s free Wi-Fi, games such as darts, pool, chess, and video games, and it’s a great spot for networking. Tellers is open Tuesday through Thursday from 4pm to 9pm, and happy hour is from 4pm to 6pm.”
There are plenty of reasons to head to The Tower these days, including observing the newest sensation of spectating pickleball fever, which continues to heat up in Buffalo thanks to the fine folks at Douglas Development.
