“We remember the Dead, Because the Living are so Uninteresting.”
On Friday November 6, artist Christopher Galley will be hosting his first solo show in two years. The artist who is best known for his skeletal wheat pastes, will be exhibiting a number of his latest creations. This is the guy who cast Evel Knievel in a macabre light by manipulating his image with skull and bones. He has done the same with a number of other personalities and everyday characters.
“Andy Warhol promised the world fifteen minutes of fame. Little did we know that this prediction would become a curse. In the age of the selfie stick and Periscope, we have to ask if our current definition of fame has been earned. Recordamos a los Muertos, Porque los Vivos son tan Olvidable (We Remember the Dead, Because the Living are so Uninteresting) calls upon a personal iconography that has defined my history. It recalls a time when actions, creativity and talent are what defined our cultural identity. More importantly, it marks a time where notoriety, and more importantly respect, were earned.” – Christopher Galley
Galley partially attributes his macabre imagery to the place where he grew up. When he was young he lived directly behind the infamous cemetery where George Romero shot Night of the Living Dead. Now how is that for some inspiration?
