University at Buffalo is at it again. This time, instead of brick laying robots, three undergraduate students have come up with the ability to create self-driving recreational… not cars, but boats! Yeah, self driving cars are so passé – now it’s all about serious rest and relaxation, because some day your boat will take care of the rest. All you have to worry about is catching some sun. And if you aren’t actually steering the boat, does that mean that you can crack open a couple of beers? This could be the game changer for boating on the Canadian side of Lake Erie.
The technology application will be applied to yacht owners as well as commercial shipping, and as the students explain in the following video, the days of equipment being reactive instead of predictable is nearing the end. Not only will boaters be taken to their chosen destination, the technology will also anticipate weather conditions, floating obstacles, and myriad other hazards that are not readily seen with some of today’s navigation equipment.
